Music smart playlists and player always on

Hi guys,

very happy with the work, I think the server and apps work really good and as I said, I am quite happy with it. Just a couple of things regarding the Music section.

It will be a massive extra help is you give the chance to build smart playlists or at least, when you are filtering your searchings, to have more choices in the “is - is not” fields. For example, when you filter by genre, now you have just the option to chose between “is” or “not is” and I find this very basic. If you would be able to add an extra fixture to the genre searchings like “contains” (which it’s already in searching filter/by artist), that would be a massive help to build more accurated playlists.

And regarding the player, happy with it but it would be nice to add a “driving car feature” so the screen would be always on, showing the music that you are listening, in the way that Spotify and other streaming services like Subsonic and their players are doing.

Other than that, as I said, very happy with the server and the players.

Thanks for the good work! Keep on going!

The reason the Genre filter offers “is/is not” instead of “contains/starts with…” options is because the value (third) field is a drop-down list populated by the actual genres found in your library, rather than a free-form text field that you type into. If you click on the value field, you’ll see a dropdown list of all the genres from all the artists/albums in your Library (imagine my surprise to find there’s something in my library with genre “Avant-Garde”):

If you want to filter for, as an example, artists with either “Celtic” or “Celtic New Age,” you can select multiple items from the dropdown list, as shown in this How-To.

Note: When the filter options are “is/is not,” you can still type into the value field. In the example above, you see “Celtic” and “Celtic New Age” genres. If you type “new” in the value field, the dropdown list will pare itself down to show all genres that include those letters.

This allows you to replicate the “contains,” “begins with,” and “ends with” functions that are available for free-form text filters.

Hi Beckfied,

many thanks for the guidance. It works for me but not 100% because, for instance, I have a lot of different sub-genre linked to Jazz Rock in my Music Library so I have Jazz Rock but also Jazz Rock Fusion and also Jazz Rock Experimental and also… in this case if I want to add them all to a playlist called Jazz Rock, with so many sub-Jazz Rock genres, there is a moment that there is not more gap in the filter field to add all of them, all the sub-Jazz Rock genre, it’s allowing me to add just 7 or 8 of those sub-genres in the filter, no more… :expressionless:

But anyway, thanks again for your guidance!!

This does’t help you if you’re using the web/desktop, but in case you’re using an iPhone as your Plex player, there’s a 3rd party music player with Plex support called Prism, which does smart playlists/filters much better than Plex’s own apps.

Hi Certuna, it´s exactly what I need, I’ll take a look to Prism, for sure! Thanks for the great tip!

Ooops you said iPhone, not for Android? :frowning:

Yes unfortunately…
