Need help troubleshooting Plex Media Server causing MacOS to crash during nightly maintenance

Hi Plex Team - I am in desperate nedd of your help. I’ve been running PMS almost since the very beginning, at least 8 years on a series of Mac Mini’s, very successfully.

Since mid August, I noticed that the when I logged on the Server I was seeing the dreaded “Your computer was restarted because of a problem.” message.

After doing a ton of troubleshooting, I was able to identify that shutting down Plex Media server at night (say 10 or 11 PM) eliminated the restarts during the night. In my simple look at the MacOS logs and the PMS logs, PMS appears to be in the middle of the nightly maintenance activities when the crash and reboot occurs.

Most times the server restarts, however sometimes the server shuts off completely… Either way, not a good scenario…

After doing DB restores from backup, etc. I finally broke down (I have four distinct libraries of movies and tv shows totaling over 20,000 files) and did a 100% full reinstall of PMS AFTER uninstalling it 100% (deleting all the dbs, etc.), running a full system maintenance with Cocktail 11.6.3 High Sierra Edition and a full reboot before installing PMS and setting up the entire system from scratch, including all new libraries, etc.

Took 7-8 hours for all the library updates to complete and when I got up this morning … BAM … the dreaded computer was restarted because of a problem.

I am 99% sure PMS is involved … there is nothing else running on the mac mini sans a few standard apps (dropbox, backblaze) and that is it. iTunes is not running or anything else…

Server Version#: Version 1.13.5.5332

I did run EtreCheck as well and it did report 29 Kernel Panics in the past 7 days …
and the last shutdown cause -63 - Unknown

THANKS!

Patrick

Kernel panics can be a pain but with your situation 29 in 7 days Ooouch. If you have followed the following support page from apple.

I would try isolating the ram as i’m running PMS on high Sierra without issue with Version 1.13.8.5388. A few months ago i was in the same boat and one Ram module was the cause. Worth a try.

Thanks @SE56, I ran the MacOS mem tests and it came out fine.

I also ran Rember (memtest) through 20 full sequences of deep memory testing and everything was fine.

Can’t say for sure it is not a memory issue, but no indications that it is…

I do run handbrake on the machine from time to time, which puts quite a load and I never see a Kernel panic doing video conversions, which I (assume??) would also be a high memory stress load…

Any other areas to check?

I don’t know enough about dissecting the PMS logs or whatever to investigate in the either the PMS or MacOS logs to further isolate a potential root cause…

Thanks!!!

You could try a CPU test like in this article.

Thanks @SE56 - I ran full CPU load tests for short (5 min) and long term (1+ hrs) without any issue …

Yet my machine still restarts every night during the Plex Maintenance cycle.

That really suggests to my that Plex is at the root of causing this restart … Is there any deeper logging or specific actions I can take to validate this hypothesis??

Patrick

Well after all these tests. I have moved on to Mojave you have ruled out Hardware, you should look at updating your PMS to the latest public release 1.13.8.5395 . I have moved on to Mojave from High Sierra without issue.

I have a similar issue in Mac OS X, High Sierra. Any time I run Plex Media Server, the computer will crash within 5-15 minutes of opening PMS. This has been happening for a little longer than a week. I’ve reinstalled the latest version of PMS, to no avail. At this point, I haven’t been able to successfully run PMS without suffering a system crash.

Just to resurrect, I bought a brand spanking new mac ($2500 out the back pocket), reloaded PMS from scratch and it STILL craps out …:angry::angry::angry:

I am now 100% convinced it is PMS. And I believe I know where the issue lies. It lies in transcoding. Any sync to a device (like an iPAD) or any conversions going on, it will die.

What the heck can I do, share, log, etc. to help with this? Please. Thank you!!!

Can you confirm which Server version your using and MacOS version please?

I’m on:
MacOS Mojave 10.14.1
Using PMS 1.14.1.5488

On a Mac Mini 2018, 3.2ghz i7 with 32gb RAM

Nothing else running on this machine (just bought and did a clean PMS install)

Thanks, now that we have that out of the way. Your content is stored on External drives or NAS? I use LG WebOS app and iPads. Don’t actually use the Sync function but have read it had caused issue in the past.

Look forward to your reply

Thanks! My content in on two thunderbolt 2 drives, connected directly to the Mac.

From what I can tell it is inconsistent on any particular title it fails on.

And I’ve been able to get it to fail on both synch (to an iPad for example) and with creating optimized versions - which is what led me to think the transcoding might be the issue …

though I do not recall any issues during playback…
