New content shows up in player that hasn't been added to my library

I bought a Synology NAS unit specifically to set up a Plex server as a part of my plan to cut the cord. So far, this has been disappointing. Plex has proven to finicky at best. The server will randomly stop working, and the buffering is terrible. At first I thought it was the network, but I don’t have these issues with the Synology Video app.

I’m still attempting to use Plex on my smart TV, because its my only option. The latest mystery is all the content that shows up when I start the app, either on the TV or my laptop. Movies show up that I haven’t added to my library. If I select the mystery content, I get a message that says its not available. If I check the files on my server, the content isn’t there.

Could this be content Plex wants to sell as part of their premium service? All I know is that its just one more issue with Plex. I can’t get my own content and Plex wants list content that I don’t own and can’t view! Is this worth saving or is it time to find another media server?

When you click on the respective movies / items and click Get Info, this will show the file name. Your description sounds like you have added a poorly named file that Plex mismatched for something else.

As for your other issue…
Plex will adjust the video quality to meet e.g. client restrictions. This is a feature to allow media playback on clients that don’t support the exact container or codecs of your files. The average NAS on the other hand doesn’t have a super strong CPU – this can result in buffering.
Synology’s own apps sometimes support hardware transcoding using the particular chips/cpu/graphics unit.

Tom,
Are you suggesting that poorly named files would somehow populate my Plex dashboard with movies that don’t exist inn my library? I’m not sure you understand my issue.
Thanks for your interest.

Trumpy,
Thanks for your interest but this response sounds like a stock answer to any post mentioning content. This doesn’t address my post. It seems like an ad FileBot.

It certainly can. Read the naming guide and try sticking to it. In particular if you have any extra files in a folder with a movie, Plex may try and scan it as another media file. You don’t need filebot, you need 1/2 hour and a cup of coffee.

Plex does not sell content. The only content you could possibly see are the podcasts or web shows, but those would not be in your own library sections.
