I have been using Plex on my home desktop PC for many years (all fine) and I recently bought a new laptop so I have configured my laptop up with plex however after adding in the new file path its not finding any of my files.
The files I had on my PC have been transferred over straight to my laptop (naming convention has not changed…and was working fine on PC). I added in the new file path (now D: in laptop).
can you be a bit more specific? are you now using your laptop as your plex server? did you install plex and add libraries to the server in the laptop that point to the files on the D drive?
I will try…yes, I am getting rid of my desktop PC so i downloaded Plex on my laptop, removed my desktop PC server on Plex and started essentially from scratch. Added in a new library (TV Shows), pointed it to my new drive on my laptop (D:) and scanned.
OK, so make sure you deleted your old server. depending on how youre accessing the server, the interface isnt natural and you might not be seeing the new server. what client are you using to see your content and play?
How do you mean what client am I using? I have plex via Google Chrome and I play my files on my laptop with VLC. This was the exact same as my desktop PC
go to library - edit-advanced and try a different scanner and or agent. depending on the version you started with, the new version might have changed the defaults so the shows dont scan under the type of media in these options.
@OttoKerner, Plex is seeing the files/folders as he shows in the screen shot above. i had this issue when i started adding 4K stuff and because i was mixing movies with series, the default scanner would not pickup certain files so I had to play with the settings I posted earlier. that should do the trick for @dipper303M1
Irregardless of the fact that @dipper303M1 stated that he did a direct copy of all files as he had them before, and if that is the case, does Plex edit how the app scans folders as versions get updated? This would explain a lot as I just rebuilt my server and files that had no issues scanning before are taking super long to be added this time around. And i had my formatting the same way it was before.
Yes. If the previous plex installation was already a few years old, this may indeed happen.
It naming and folder organization wasn’t according to the official requirements, then the newer Plex editions may not recognise the media anymore - when added “as new”. Because some Google APIs are no longer available, which previously could be used to match very badly named files…
Now ALLLLLL of that makes perfect sense. Is there a link to what plex likes and doesn’t like when it comes to folder/files hierarchy and naming conventions?
In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under
Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase
Take the title as it is used on TheTVDB. If there is something in parentheses, take that too. If the title contains invalid characters (depends on your file system), like § : % *, simply leave them out.
Check the naming and the folder structure of your show. Name the top folder of the show exactly after the title on TheTVDB. No abbreviations. No additional subfolders. No aliases. Add the (year) in parentheses of when episode 1 of season 1 of this show was aired.
Name the episode files according to the above linked naming guide. Use the same title as for the top folder. Show's Title (year) - s01e01 - additional info.ext (’- additional info’ can be left out)
After you corrected the naming and folder structure, perform the Plex Dance with all files for this show.
