New NAS with PMS, while old NAS still running PMS, can't "switch" to new NAS

Hey guys

I’m setting up my new NAS. Plex server is running on both NAS’s, logged into the same account.

When I launch the web interface from my new NAS - and log in - I can only access media on my old NAS. I can’t add libraries that are on my new NAS.

Both NAS’s are connected to the same switch, and are on the same subnet.

My plan is to finish setting up my new NAS, which will then take over the role of Plex server. I will then remove the Plex server from the old NAS.

There doesn’t seem to be a way to either:

  • Have both NAS’s media be available at the same time on the Plex server

  • Switch to using my new NAS for media.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks you

I would have thought it ‘should’ be possible to have 2 NAS’s running Plex and both be available. Not sure why that would be any different to having Plex running on different devices (I have 1 on a NAS, 1 on an iMac and another on a laptop)

Did you get an option to claim your new server?

Do you see your new NAS in the list of authorised devices here:

I didn’t get the option to claim.

I can only see the old NAS under authorized devices.

ok, so what happens if you open a private/incognito browser window and go to:

ipaddressofnewnas:32400

(just checking, are the ip addresses regular local network ip addresses?)

I’m accessing them from within my LAN, at this time. I’ll try plugging in that address, and also read what @trumpy81 said.

Thanks! :relaxed:

You would be better off following trumpy81’s Q16 on the FAQ page.

The FAQ’s do cover pretty much everything you need to know regarding running Plex on a Synology

The Windows exe, gave exceptions every time, so tried the script on the NAS and got:

plex.tv Password:
plex.tv Password Repeated:
IP Address of PMS server: 192.168.0.12
Comparing entered passwords
Comparing entered passwords ok
Validating IP address
Getting PMS Server Identifier
Getting PMS Server Identifier ok
Getting User Token from plex.tv
Getting User Token from plex.tv ok
Getting PMS Claim Token
Getting PMS Claim Token ok
Claiming server
Fatal error happened
HTTP returned Status 401

hmm, so as per trumpy’s FAQ’s that 401 error suggests it is already claimed.

Note: If your Plex server has already been claimed, the script will return a 401 error.`

So I would try the part:

In some cases where the script has failed to correct the issue, you may need to:

1. Stop Plex from running
2. Open File Station and navigate to: `Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server`
3. Delete `Preferences.xml` .
4. Restart Plex.

Ahh thanks, I missed that part. Will try when I get back from dinner :relaxed:

EDIT: stopped plex server on both NAS’s and deleted that file, then starting it on the new NAS, seemed to do the trick, and I can now se both NAS’s under servers.

Thanks for the help guys
