@IanDBird
Just received the update to 6.6.1 (Had to uninstall and reinstall due to Amazon’s lack of an update option) But glad to say the stuttering is now fixed. Say thanks to the devs for their hard hork!
Running 6.6.1.2447 on FireTV and still getting stuttering, not as bad as before, but still there.
I also had to manually uninstall and reinstall. The stuttering is almost unnoticeable now. Huge improvement. Thanks to the devs. I admit the videos I tried on it were all h.264 Level 4.1, but the Fire Stick had no trouble with these files before September. I hope the devs are able to eliminate the last of the stuttering in a future update. I think the Fire Stick Gen1 is usable again though.

Set your max H.264 level to 4.0 (this should be the default on Fire Stick devices). The gen1 Sticks don’t properly deal with 4.1 encodings, so setting to 4.0 forces a server-side transcode which should make the playback smoother.
I’m now also running on the new build, and playback is not stuttering at all for me. Crossing fingers that it stays this way. The UI, on the other hand, is noticeably sluggish… ![]()
Think I might just stick with the old versions until they no longer work!
6.7.1.2498 Released
//UPDATE//
Still stuttering sometimes. Looks like it affects H.264 4.1 files. Which played very well some time ago
Hope another update will fix this last point for me
But also a huge improvement! Dev’s are on a good way
What’s the current status of this… just picked up a 2nd Gen Fire Stick specifically for Plex and it stutters horribly. I executed the workaround and running the old version which seems to be working fine; however, when do we expect a solution for this?
Hi All,
I posted about this issue in another section only last night, and then stumbled across this thread! I’d concluded from all my testing and analysis that the issue was with the Plex Client on my Fire Stick.
It’s exactly the same issue as described here, stuttering for a few seconds every 10-12 seconds through the stream. It’s irrelevant if it’s Direct Play, Stream or Transcode or 1080p or down at 480p.
I’m running Plex Server: 1.9.7.4460, Plex Client on Fire Stick: 6.9.0.26683 (Last update 16th Nov) and I have the 2nd Gen Fire Stick.
Clearly this issue still isn’t resolved, and I’m astounded that it’s been an issue for so long. I’ve moved from Kodi to Plex and a Plex Pass with a QNAP server, and this has made my move seem a complete waste of 100’s of £’s!!!
What’s the latest with this Plex Team/Ian???
I’m going to role back as provide in this thread, but is far rather use the latest versions with all updates and features, otherwise the development progress is pointless!!
Anyone else still having issue?
I am still having the issue as of last weekend. As previously mentioned newer updates have made it less noticeable, but it’s definitely still there for any media I run through my FireTV stick.
I just bought a new Fire TV. The first generation Fire Stick was a real turd. It’s the slowest FTV device by a huge margin. For those who don’t mind spending the money, the new FTV is fast and smooth. It’s a little anemic as a 4K streamer, but it handles all the 1080p I throw at it with ease. Even the second generation Stick is much faster than the 1st gen.
The issue I have is on both the Fire Stick 1st and 2nd Gen, and both as bad as each other!
If the updates did improve it slightly, I’m glad I’ve only just found it then, because I can’t believe it be any worse than what I’ve got!

Oh ya, I was about to throw out the FireTV stick because it was so bad. And after this came out, I still might ![]()

Odd I don’t have any issues with my Gen1 or Gen2 Firesticks now with the latest version
No problems with my 2nd gen Fire TV Stick at all. I like the new interface as it labels my folders. Haven’t tried it lately on my first gen stick. Had to roll back to the previous version because of the dropped frames.
Is this still a known issue? Is anyone still getting unacceptable stuttering on the Fire OS Apps for the AFTV & Stick?
I’m still running an older version of the App to get around the issue, but would prefer to go back to the latest version (as i preferred it, i know most people didnt!)
Can someone please tell me how to roll back to an older version of Plex on a second Gen fire stick? or provide the work around stated above. I’m running a older version on my Roku 5.000 something. It works great on my Roku but on my second generation firestick complete grainy shuttering on version 6.6… This sucks Plex Team!!

It’s been resolved for me for the first-gen Fire TV Stick.
Important caveat: The fix, which involves slightly reduced video quality decoding in exchange for better CPU performance, only exists in builds that come from the Amazon App Store, not sideloaded APKs downloaded from elsewhere. So if you are still sideloading/downloading an APK, you will not get the version with the special Fire TV Stick decoder included.
(Plex folks: It would be nice, however, if you included direct download links to the Amazon-targeted APK just like for the other Android builds…!)
Has anyone been able to confirm @duhorg’s solution for 2nd Gen FireTV Stick?
I’ve been also waiting news… I’m using the older version but would like to upgrade if it’s working flawlessly. How much is a “slightly reduced video quality”? Not sure if I’m willing to compromise quality for the new look and better stability.

By “slightly reduced video quality” I mean the same as what you’ve been seeing with the old version of the app.
In particular, the Fire TV Stick first-generation units have a CPU not capable of keeping up with full HD decoding using the standard Plex video engine, so on those units, it uses a decoder with simpler and less CPU-taxing math operations. That is true both in the older and newer versions of the app.
