New Xbox One App preview

This has now been fixed :+1:

That’s expected behaviour, the overview screen is where you normally land when entering a show. A show with seasons hidden would still have one. But as a tip for quicker navigation you can press the left and right bumper buttons on the controller to quickly navigate between tabs.

thank you! great news

This is something I miss most from the previous version. Any chance it will be reinstated?

When viewing the cast members of a movie and selecting one that contains a long actor’s name and/or a long character’s name, the long actor’s name will automatically scroll but not the long character name.

For example: Benjamin “Benji” Dunn from some of the Mission: Impossible films appears as Benjamin “Benji”…

What is the status of the issue where Live TV through Plex can only be played for about 15 minutes before permanently failing (endless buffering condition)?

I’m assuming this affects everyone and as with my experience happens 100% of the time (please chime in if that is not your experience).

I know there have been some (very minor) improvements made with buffering issues in general but Live TV is simply broken because of the 15 minute failure issue.

It makes absolutely no sense to be implementing improvements (ie: new guide experience) without first ensuring that Live TV actually works. I’m still forced to use HDHomeRun for all live tv viewing (which btw, suffers no buffering whatsoever even when time shifting, etc).

???

I’m still having issues - depending on which channel I watch. For example:

BBC1 (Standard definition):

Buffers for 3 to 4 seconds, screen flickers, and then continues buffering until I stopped it a couple of minutes later (Tried it a few times)

BBC2 (Standard definition), ITV1 (Standard defintition) and BBC1 HD:

Buffers for 3 to 4 seconds, screen flickers, and then buffers for about 5 more seconds before starting playback. After 7 to 10 seconds of viewing it buffers again - I have had this across all the new XBox app previews.

I will update this post in about 15 minutes as I now have BBC1 HD on in the background

UPDATE: Is has now stopped so I am seeing the problem as well :frowning: Initially the screen looked like it had paused but eventual the app responded with “An unexpected playback problem has occurred”.

UPDATE 2: I have also reproduced this with already recorded TV. I am having difficulty playing back some HD content at “original” quality through Plex on my Xbox. As such I have had to set the Video Quality to “2 Mbps, 720p” at which point it also freezes after 12 to 15 minutes of playback.

Most annoying behavior, when switching back to Plex from game.

Old App: continue where I left
New App: Homescreen

@Moussa Why do you guys seem so against this?

Client version: 5.2.1
Platform Version: 10.0.19041.4981

I’m part of a household that has multiple users in it with passcodes. There doesn’t seem to be an option for automatic login after the screen upon launch of the app. Just a small thing as each time I go to screen saver I have to input my pin again on my controller. I believe the function was there on the older app but I won’t go back to that.

Hola @Moussa thanks for the update. Unfortunately, this still happens in the newer version, it just takes longer, say like 15-20 songs… My library is 1000s deep & I have the screen saver disabled.

Version: 2.59.3.70
Client Version: 5.2.1
Platform Version 10.0.19041.4981

i was using this preview app for 4 weeks. then the latest update made things worse. it takes 10-18 seconds to load any movie over 8M bit rate. it doesn’t like playing 1080p over 10M bitrate. after 10-20 minutes it just buffer every 5-10 seconds. but watching tv-shows is fine. my speed can handle it well. as it is all local. plex server is running on a spare pc i built running linux. never have problems on other devices in my home. i had to revert back to using none preview and my problems have gone.

@Moussa

Automatic Sign In isn’t available for Home Users, which is fundamentally annoying in a home setting.

Also +1 here to the many people experiencing the Live TV buffering after 15 minutes issue. Could you please look into this? Live TV is unusable now even though you’ve given it a beautiful guide. I’ve had to go back to the Chromecast which Direct Plays streams.

Otherwise the Preview app is a nice, smoother upgrade.

Are you sure? Have you gone to settings and turned it on? It’s working for me.

You’re seeing it for other Home Users? I’ve tried 2 Xbox’s and both only allow it for the Home Admin, not the other users.

Is the grid guide working for anyone in the preview version?

When I tried, I see the times, but the guide is just spinning.

Server: 1.20.3.3483
Client: 5.2.1

So it looks like the Live TV buffering at 15mins is fixed in today’s update, from what I’ve tested anyway. Thanks!

If you enable it for your full account and then switch to a managed account the app should automatically sign into the managed account on every subsequent app launch. Managed users just cannot change this setting.

Oh, that works. Awesome :slightly_smiling_face:.

It would be more convenient if the family home users could select it for themselves though, instead of me having to sign into their devices first. But yeah this works which is great. Thanks.

As others have reported it seems that 5.3.1 fixes this. Over the course of this morning and afternoon I have had the TV and Xbox on in the background and can report that:

  • BBC 1 HD played without issues - for over 1h 30m until I changed channel.
  • BBC 2 (Standard Definition) played without issues - for over 30 minutes.
  • ITV 1 (Standard Definition) played without issues - for nearly an hour.
  • 4 HD played without issues - for just over 2h 30m.

Whilst BBC 1 HD (Channel 101) is good I am still having issues with the standard definition version of BBC 1 (Channel 1) here.

The Samsung Tizen preview running on my The Frame 2019 didn’t have any issues with the standard definition version of BBC1 in 5.2.1 but it looks like there may be an issue with audio as that channel appear silent now :frowning:

Update:

@Moussa: I got to the bottom of both the XBox preview giving me the “An unexpected playback problem occurred” error and the Samsung Tizen preview having no audio when trying to tune Live TV to BBC1 (Channel 001) on Freeview.

For some reason both apps are showing the following available audio tracks for this channel as:

  • English (MP2 Stereo)
  • English (MP2 Mono)
  • Unknown (MP2 Stereo)

…and unfortunately both apps are selecting the “Unknown (MP2 Stereo)” audio track despite having the application set to either “English” or “English (UK)” in Settings → General → Language.

If I start viewing the channel, allow it to start buffering and then change the audio track to “English (MP2 Stereo)” from the popup display then on the Xbox app it plays, displaying video and playing audio and on the Samsung Tizen app, which was already displaying video, then I also have sound

Unfortunately as soon as I navigate to another part of Plex and return to viewing Live BBC1 then I have to set the audio again to “English (MP2 Stereo)” as it will automatically chooses “Unknown (MP2 Stereo)” otherwise Plex will fail to play the channel resulting in the above mentioned error message again.
