Server Version#: 1.43.0.10492
Player Version#: 8.45 (9684) [I have tried on iOS devices, and web borwser as well with same results.
Good afternoon,
I could really use some help as I am many hours deep in to researching myself and trying to fix this problem with absolutely nothing to show for my efforts. Earlier this week I had some serious issues with my sabnzbd setup I completely nuked it and started from scratch. Since that day any new media added refuses to play (while everything from before that moment plays without issue). When attempting to play from a web browser the error show is:
“An error occurred trying to play "title name".
Error code: s1001 (Network)”
When attempting to play from an Apple TV device I get:
“Couldn’t create the playback session for this item”
Any of the files in question are functional as I can play them outside of Plex without any issues. I assume the problem to be something related to permissions but I can unable to figure that out.
Here is an entry from my logs when I attempt to play a new file.
I have used the command ps -aef | grep "plexmediaserver|sabnzbd" as well as running it individually on both services and they appear to be the same user and group as can be seen in these logs.
I have also followed this guide to set my Plex user and group to match that of my sabnzbd install which are both “andrew”.
I am attaching a screenshot that shows my checking of the permissions on an episode of a show from last week (before I nuked my install) that plays fine and then checking this week’s episode (post-nuke) that will not play. I believe they are identical.
I am at my wits end here. I have no idea how to proceed to fix this. I would greatly appreciate any assistance that can be provided.
Thank you so much for your time.
EDIT: One more possibly relevant tidbit is that I did complete the process sent out by Plex in the last couple days to switch the repository on my Ubuntu machine, however this was done just yesterday which is a few days after the failed files began.
Dateline season 34 episode 1 (9/26/2025) and Shark Tank season 17 episode 13.
I inadvertently ran an older file that does work in between. It was a Dateline episode but I forget which one it was
EDIT: Just to remove any confusion regarding timing. The Dateline episode is old and from well before my problem date however I was missing that episode until today hence why it is having problems.
I also wanted to note I tried getting that Shark Tank episode from a different computer of mine and moving it in to place on the server (instead of sabnzbd doing it) and it still has the same result.
One thing I will stay, putting files in your /home directory has never been a good idea due to weird permissions issues. I cant find the records for your attempt to play those files. but I am seeing Mar 14, 2026 10:18:51.708 [140634647128888] WARN - Error scanning directory, we'll skip and continue: boost::filesystem::last_write_time: No such file or directory [system:2]: "/home/andrew/ChiroNAS/Media/Episodes/Law & Order Special Victims Unit/Season 26" which echo’s my gut feeling about permissions.
That is odd that it was looking for that folder as it is correct that it does not exist. I remove seasons of that show as I have watched them.
I was also thinking it had to be permissions as I know the files are not broken. Do you have any ideas on what I can try to do about it? I have not been able to find any help elsewhere so far. I am far from a linux expert so I don’t know what more to do beyond what I have tried so far. As far as I can tell every test I have done has indicated the permissions are in fact correct yet here we are.
I understand my setup is not the ideal but it has functioned without issue for an entire year since I set it up this way and the only issues have begun this week after redoing my sabnzbd setup. My files are on a NAS and then just mounted to my Home directory. When I set this up a year ago I was new to Linux and did not realize the setup I was doing was not ideal but it seems it would be a lot of work to redo it at this point and I fear that due to my inexperience I may cause a whole host of new problems if I attempt to undergo a complete overhaul of my mount.
I just attempted those 2 files again and grabbed new logs. Hopefully it shows this time?
I just removed that log above and added a newer version. I have a hard time reading those logs but I attempted to watch a Shark Tank file at 18:25 which failed
My suggestion would be to mount it under /mnt that avoids any of the issues with /home and associated permissions.
EDIT:
I am also seeing: Mar 07, 2026 04:06:13.381 [125019461156608] DEBUG - [FFMPEG] - frame= 0 fps=0.0 q=0.0 size= 0kB time=N/A bitrate=N/A speed=N/A
[out#0/image2 @ 0x7faa7aeeedc0] video:0kB audio:0kB subtitle:0kB other streams:0kB global headers:0kB muxing overhead: unknown
Not sure exact cause but it is saying the file is empty, Could be permissions, or encoding format, or a corrupt file. All three would present with similar zero values.
I have completed the process of moving the mount point to:
/mnt/ChiroNAS
from:
/home/andrew/ChiroNAS
I have followed all the steps in the guide you linked for moving and upon attempting to play the previous problem files I am still getting the exact same result.
Yes I have tried both of those. I have done a complete reboot of the NAS, Ubuntu server and Plex itself.
Here is a screenshot of 2 files, the episode 12 works and episode 13 does not. As best I can tell the permissions match? And they are located in the same folder.
Nope. I watched the dashboard as I played a functional file and immediately saw it pop up, then switched to trying a file that is new and because it spits out an error the second I press “play” on any device it never pops up in the dashboard as if it was playing.
