Hi guys,

This may be a stupid question, but I can't see the harm in asking.

I've got a 2TB WD My Passport external hard drive connected to my raspberry pi (with RasPlex) and it kinda works as my file server at home. I mount it via samba in linux min 16:

```
//192.168.0.100/media/WD /media/external cifs guest,rw,uid=1000,gid=1000,nounix,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0
```

The read/write speed on the hard drive is extremely low (~3.7 MB/s), and I know a rasbperry pi is not a strong system and I can't expect much from it, but I'm trying to make it as fast as possible. I read somewhere that NFS is significantly faster than Samba, but I'm not sure if I can work with RasPlex as an NFS server. I've found this one here: [http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=14500](http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=14500), but I don't think I can install any extra packages on top of the RasPlex. My question is, is there any way to make NFS work on Rasplex?

Using RPi as a file server in a Plex Architecture is not a good idea as when you play a movie you open stream from server and the server will open it from your pi, screwing your bandwidth.

I'd suggest that you put this drive on your PMS machine and mount it there in which case you dont have to bother with NFS anymore.

Thanks for the answer. In the current setup, full HD movies play on rasplex seamlessly, maybe a bit longer buffering compared to a direct connection, but it's much more convenient for me. The only problem is copying to and from the hard drive. Can I run a NFS server on Rasplex just to test it?

I am not sure NFS server is available in Openelec.

You might wanna check their FAQ to see if that is possible. if so you should also be good in RasPlex.

Apprently [not](http://openelec.tv/forum/110-update-openelec/69123-nfs-share-out-from-openelec#96292), but thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
