Users can set nick names or clear names aside from their user account name for themselves (no matter if they’re managed or regular users). There’s a very recent suggestion which is already discussing an option to assign nick names for your own purposes to friends. Few (if any) of mine have chosen to set anything (or what they’ve set doesn’t pass to my server) so I see user names like xyzzy3.1415 which aren’t especially useful.
