My internet and tv just came back on; and three days and half, most everyone went without anything to watch, why? Because we couldn’t get the APPs on the tv or tablets to work.
I was sitting here pondering and remember i didn’t have this problem with kodi, so i got on the phone and started to search for answers when i came across comment on Reddit, and the guy said Plex Home was the issue, and i would have to Leave the Plex home, but without internet, i wouldn’t be able to do. So i tethered the phone to the computer and finally left plex home that deleted everyone!
After leaving plex home, everyone could connect to the media server.
This is so stupid! There should be a system built in plex that will automatically switch the to “Offline Mode” when no internet connection is detected! Why this is not in place already baffles me, and i’m so furious that i’m looking into other solutions to serve my media!!! Spending 3 days out of my week vacation staring at the walls!!!
I’m a truck driver on the road and at night and during my down time, i would like to connect to my $2300 media server to watch my movies and TV Shows, and plex offered that, but is it worth it if i have to try; hopefully so i can leave plex home again, and have to add and confirm the the accounts again?!?
Since it most likely already has a cached list of servers then it shouldn’t be that big of a change to have it try and connect directly to the servers in that list if it can’t reach the main Plex-domain.
What I would like is Plex home to be cached on the local server and if the Plex servers can’t be reached then to use the cached settings.
I’m pretty certain you could move authentication down into the Plex server and only use Plex servers to keep the authentication data synchronised (reducing demand/bandwidth on Plex Inc).
My Internet connection went down on Christmas day, I contacted Plusnet who promise a BT person within the next 72 hours. My expearence with BT Openreach is a guy will pop round misquote some rote learning at me, get funny while I sit there going have you checked the cabinet? Eventually he’ll go check the cabinet and tell me somethings broken and it will take a week to get a replacement part. This will be the 3rd complete failure in 4 years and 7th fault in that time. I’ve slowly built my own internal cloud which can cope without the internet, Plex used to be able to…
On the plus side the missus just ok’d the VDSL/4G router I’ve wanted for 4 years…
If I don’t have internet in my local network, I can’t connect to plex
Or if my mobile device don’t have internet and if I’m not in my local network, I can’t open local session for local content (previously synced)
This is by far the most annoying thing about PLEX, I bought a new LG 55" and have to port everything to hard drive as I have no internet connectivity until May 2017 (according to the fiber guy). I do not want to remove PLEX home as this was the main “selling” feature so as lock out my kids from harsher movies (nothing like trying to explain a Tarantino movie to a 7 year old). Can I ask for a refund on my PLEX pass for the next 5 months?
This conversation has been going on for ages now and there needs to be a formal notification as to if this will be resolved or not? So we can get on with our lives and look at alternatives or just deal with it.
Ugh! This got me a while back too! I ended up tethering my phone to my computer so I could log into the web interface. Once connected, I was cached and could use that, but the app would not authenticate at all. I get that Plex is a connected service and security / licensing tokens have to be passed around, but there’s no reason things can’t be cached long enough to withstand a few days of downtime.
I too paid for a lifetime membership.
And am currently without Internet and can’t access my library of media on my own local network. This was not an issue before with the free membership. Seems kind of counter intuitive for software to become useless when you pay for the full version. This should be addressed. You shouldn’t have to hack around or install another Dlna server to get around this issue. Very disappointed!!
Ditto for me. I am thinking I will just delete the users. I spend a lot of time camping too and it’s much easier for me to create a separate server on my laptop than it is to cast the movies to it. So I like the idea of being able to use it without an active internet connection.
This would also be really useful for the WD My Passport Wireless Pro. I use it in the car with the family, but I have do a wifi hotspot on my phone to get everybody logged in at the beginning of the trip. I know I could remove it, but I want the Plex Home stuff to keep inappropriate stuff away from kids.
It 'is possible to know if the staff can take this issue in charge ? (it’s an issue not e feature for me, I can’t use plex in my car with my children tablet).
I would love to have this as well. I have the same issues in the car. I want to have plex home enabled on my portable server, but can’t use it in the car unless I have internet access. So my car server has to be signed out to allow my kids to access it from their tablets.
This is also an issue for me I have slow as ■■■■ internet with virtually no upload speed. When I have more than one device just browsing the web on my network I start to timeout on DNS requests causing plex to not function at all. I have even lost playback in the middle of a video because of this. I would love the ability to tell my ps4 and roku to direct connect to the plex server.
As long as the server is still authenticated to be running plexpass version then when it times out it should automatically connect locally. Why does it need to use plex servers to authenticate a local connection?
Hate to necro an old thread but a few days ago, I was having some problems with the internet and lost my connection to the outside world for a little while. During that down time, I fired up Plex to catch up on some TV shows/movies and much to my surprise, I couldn’t access my server. At all. I tried that ‘Offline mode’ and still no go. WTH? So I did some Googling and sure enough, found lots of thread complaining about this. Will this EVER be addressed? If the internet goes down, Plex should keep on trucking.
