No more desktop mode in PMP?

That may have been their original plan.
That plan changed when everyone (except you, apparently) showed up with their hair on fire - and Plex changed their mind (instead of turning the forum over to naked savages):

That’s a good read for a rainy day (week). The point is those same naked savages haven’t gone anywhere. They didn’t rush off to Emby. They’re ready to riot again at the drop of a hat.

I predict PMP/TV View will be around for a while.

No, the original bit was them discontinuing PMP’s TV Mode. The new one is that they are discontinuing DESKTOP mode in PMP.

The truth is we want BOTH modes because both offer a superior solution vs the Plex Apps.

That it is too hard to maintain both UIs is, frankly, a garbage excuse. Why exactly does the TV mode does not support the mouse when it is actually a desktop application?

The UI is a responsive web application after all, so it should have the capability to change layout for multiple interfaces without reducing functionality and without needing to be relaunched, let alone being separate interfaces entirely. The explanation reads like something from 20 years ago.

The TV mode supports almost none of the configuration or options of the Desktop mode and it’s unacceptable.

A picture of the exact message for those who think I was just dredging up last years problem.

Plex has swung the other way entirely now. You say its too hard to support both, but they are already supporting both via Plex and PMP.

So yeah, they will drop support for one or the other some point after the fork. That they say they won’t is like a big company saying “There aren’t any plans for workforce reductions” and when they do its “the situation changed and we had to adapt to a challenging market”

Its all BS speak.

I believe you - I just don’t care.

Plex had a plan - the plan changed.
I still have PMP - I use it when I need TV View on the TV.
I have PfW - I use it when I need a powerful player on the Desktop.
If Plex moves to dump PMP - there will be another riot.
But - in the end. Plex will do what Plex wants to do.
I will riot - then adapt - if necessary.

You do what you want.
I hear Emby is nice this time of year.

I don’t undestand why you would do this. I read your reasoning, but it doesn’t make sense when the Plex App is still inferior in so many ways. Can’t fullscreen without either playing a video first or carrying a keyboard with me to hit F11 instead of just using a wireless mouse/remote control app on my phone. Can’t see stats using ctrl+shift+D. Can’t search writers/directors/ect anymore when using certain agents (Basically anything that isn’t TVdb, from my testing). HDR issues. I’m sure there’s more that others have found.

At the very least, it’s WAY too soon to remove desktop mode from PMP. It should at the LEAST only be done when Plex app has complete feature and usability parity.

While there are plenty of things that I have been annoyed by over the last 18 months (TV/DVR and the Android app being the top two), this change doesn’t really bother me that much. All my use cases are covered by PMP or Plex For Windows.

My office desktop is the server and I use either Plex For Windows or the browser interface to manage the server. I have 5.1 speakers connected to my PC and configure them properly in the Windows control panel – Plex for Windows works great for me as a player and the surround sound comes out fine since it just follows the windows settings for sound.

I have PMP installed on a PC in my living room and it is connected to my AV receiver which is connected to my TV (just a dumb non-smart TV). I have a small USB wireless mini keyboard/mouse device that I use as my remote. You get them on AliExpress for under $10 and they’re great. The TV mode is all I ever need on this computer. I don’t manage the server from the living room – I just watch TV. The sound configuration options in PMP are fantastic. It detects all the audio formats supported by AV receiver and for each format, I can configure whether PMP should decode the audio (and send PCM) or pass through the format to the AV receiver to decode. Since I’m using a mini keyboard/mouse as my remote I have great control – special media keys that work in plex and a full keyboard with Shift/Ctrl/Alt/Win keys to let me do anything required in Windows outside of plex.

Are there a few things that don’t work exactly the way I would have chosen? Sure. But overall, my needs (for Windows) are covered off pretty well by the combination of Plex For Windows and the TV mode of PMP.

Over time, I expect that some of the small annoyances in Plex For Windows will get addressed. For example, Kougeru, I know you currently have to press F11 to go full screen outside of a video. But it’s not like it will be rocket science for Plex to add a button for that on the top right toolbar somewhere. Plex listened when we complained about losing TV mode. So I would expect that they won’t remove desktop mode before Plex For Windows is a good solid alternative.
