No sound on Plex App on Windows 11

Hi everyone,

I’m having no sound in the Plex desktop app on Windows 11 and I’m completely out of ideas.

Here’s what I’ve already tried:

  • Reinstalled Plex
  • Fresh install of Windows 11
  • Checked the volume mixer – not muted
  • Installed Dolby AC4 decoder and encoder
  • Correct audio output device is selected in Plex and Windows
  • All audio passthrough options (AC3, DTS, TrueHD, EAC3) are disabled

What’s strange is that sound works everywhere else:

  • app.plex.tv in the browser works fine
  • Plex on Apple TV and Android works fine
  • Opening the same files directly in VLC works fine

The only place it doesn’t work is the Plex desktop app on Windows.

One interesting clue: in VLC, I had to switch the audio output from DirectSound to WaveOut to get any sound at all – regardless of the file. With WaveOut selected it works perfectly, but DirectSound/WASAPI is completely silent.

This makes me think there’s something wrong with how WASAPI is behaving on my system, and since Plex only uses WASAPI (unlike VLC which has WaveOut as a fallback), the desktop app stays silent while everything else works.

Has anyone seen this before or have any ideas what could be causing it?

Thanks

Did you also install the E-AC3 and AC3 decoder?

Yes, installed e-ac3 and also installed k-lite codec pack (i dont think that was useful but why not)
