You probably got the firmware upgrade that removed sideloading:

And 25 pages on the Now TV forum

Damn....

I have a few boxes , one for my son's tv and one for my sister.

Is there a cheap alternative ?

is an android tv box an option , or are those crap for using plex?

#4

I wouldn't buy a cheap android TV box as they're pretty rubbish and not very well supported generally.
Cheap options would be an Amazon fire stick, a roku stick (curry's seen to have then for about £20) or maybe a Raspberry Pi. Plenty of options mentioned in the Now tv forum thread I posted.

Just ordered a fire tv 4k, saw some youtube test , they did compare nvidia shield , roku 3, xbox one, nuc, and fire tv stick and the fire tv 4k,

The fire tv was fast and easy to use

The fire tv stick was verry slow

I thinkt its an good option for my sister

A Roku 3 is bulletproof and the Plex app for Roku is also far and away the best choice.

I'd love to run my AFTV more often, but sadly the Plex App seems to be stuck in a perpetual state of 'broken'.

My Roku 3 remains my most reliable Plex Client and I don't foresee any changes to that situation any time soon. A quick trip down through this forum should illustrate what I'm talking about:
https://forums.plex.tv/categories/google-tv-amazon-fire-tv

All the apps have their little issues, but the difference in the Roku app is that a bug report generates a post or two then @ljunkie shows up to investigate then promptly fix the issue. There are some threads over on the AFTV forum that are old enough to start drawing a pension.

If Amazon UK's return policy is as bulletproof in the UK as it is here in the US I'd perhaps rethink that plan a bit.

I would just get a Roku stick, since we have such a great Plex developer. I have the new model Roku stick and use it even more than my Roku 3. I have a small house and newer router, so I do not have any wireless issues, but the Roku stick works great and would be an upgrade from a NowTV box. And they put it on sale from time to time.

Thanks for al the advice

This is really sad. I actually have both a white NowTV and a Chromecast plugged into my main TV, the NowTV was getting slower and slower with recent firmware versions but was kept around with Plex Classic because sometimes things are easier with a remote and the audio out was useful to feed into my soundbar. I guess the Chromecast will have to take over now although I'm going to have to work out a way of getting audio from the HDMI cable.

I also have two more NowTVs - a white one on an older TV thanks to the composite video out and a black one I have on a TV for guests. After this ridiculous move Sky aren't getting any more of my money. The only reason I haven't bought a few Roku streaming sticks is that I'm pretty sure Sky are connected to Roku somehow and I don't want them to profit.

Firesticks will run Plex a bit. Android runs it in a fashion. Not as good though. The Roku seems the best choice TBH.
The Now TV boxes have been despatched to the rubbish bin here, Roku, Firestick or Android running Plex now.

You can still run Plex classic if you want on a Roku.

They're private channels so:
https://www.rokuguide.com/private-channels/plex-classic - click big green button (after having signed in at my.roku.com, of course) then run an update routine from Roku Home/System. It'll be at the end of your app lists - move as appropriate.

RARflix link in my signature and here:
http://streamfree.tv/roku-channels/private/all/rarflix-108-thread.html
Same deal as above.

All 3 can run independently. Click the one you want.

You need the correct Roku channel adding code for those channels on a Roku or you can sideload a Roku.
It just works as it always has..

Isn't Roku owned by the nowtv people, in part at least, so it seems that as they apparently consider Plex to be illegal - so their rep told me in text chat - it seems they're as likely to access your Roku and delete stuff from it as they are to have done the same with the nowtv version of the Roku?

Just looked at this, this doesn't work for nowtv boxes, only the Roku branded ones I think?

Nowtv boxes and Rokus are NOT the same thing.

Nowtv wants to keep you locked up in their ecosystem. Plex looks like an escape plan to them. Kill Plex. Problem solved.

When you put your trust in a 'Rep on Chat' you put your trust in a person living in India reading from a prepared script, most of which saying: 'Whatever happens, blame the other guys'.

I still suggest if you're in the market for a device that'll run Plex without issue - buy a Roku 3. Anything else will come with a large slice of Fail Cake.

Hello,
For Now TV boxes that are not upgraded yet (maybe this one with freeview, maybe not the white or black), the work around for a local network usage of Plex is to set parental control in your router (with a new profil, it's a fritbox for me) to forbidden internet access. Worked for me, update not working anymore and I have access to what I need, local Plex and TV tuner. Well I dont have access anymore to other internet apps but I dont care. If someone has the Hostname of IP of Sky Now TV server update it could be really interesting. I will try later to snif it with Wireshark...
Cheers

Discussions about how to hack into a device to install software , the company has explicitly said they do not want and disabled will not be discussed here on this forum. There are plenty of other places on the internet to do that.
