Server Version#: 1.19.2.2737
Player Version#: 8.0.0.17276
I’ve been starting to have issues with certain 4K UHD Bluray (MKV) crashes the last 2 weeks on my nVidia Shield TV. I’ve tried everything including making sure the server is up to date, client is up to date, and even tried enrolling in the Beta. Still having the same issues over and over. It’ll go to start, yellow circle spins, then it crashes and restarts the plex app and back to the main menu. Today I tried reverting back to the public channel for the plex app (but noticed now that 8.0.0 was being pushed vs. 7.x previously). New player on/off doesn’t seem to matter. Sometimes if I disable refresh rate switching I can get the movie to play, other times not. I’m attaching the player log, hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. Jurassic Park 4K UHD Crash Log.txt (1.2 MB)
I’ve also been experiencing some stuttering on other titles too. Apparently there is a known issue of running Plex on the Tube (non-pro) 2019 Shield TV (with its 2gb RAM vs. the pro’s 3GB ram). nVidia even officially acknowledges this problem, and says
" [Shield@NVIDIA] 9h
We’ve been working with Plex on this issue. There memory footprint has gotten away on them and there working to track down what’s eating up the extra memory to clean it up. They’ve been improving and have more improvements coming. We’re going to keep at it until we get it cleaned up."
Plex team, any response!!! Basically they’re saying your app is at fault…
Interesting experience last night. Earlier in the day the shield was working fine with plex, watched a couple 4K UHD movies. Then in the afternoon I listened to some music on tidal, watched one episode of billions (showtime app). Later in the night I tried to watch another 4K movie and nothing but stuttering and crashes constantly. Went back and tried one of the movies that worked earlier in the day flawlessly, and now it was crashing and stuttering too.
Ended up going to menu, apps, and force stopping Tidal, Showtime, and Plex. Then and only then, did things run well again.
Not sure if this is a Plex App issue (nvidia blames plex), or a shield/android underlying problem with properly closing/terminating other apps. But its annoying as hell. Never had this issue on my Roku (then again, roku doesn’t “multitask” the same way that android-tv can)
Absolutely infuriated tonight. Again tried the jurassic Park 4k uhd. The one I got working a few days back after rebooting, force closing plex etc. Could not get it to go no matter what tonight. I really cannot figure out wtf is going on with the inconsistency on some 4k uhd mkv files. Certain ones seem to be very problematic. Other more basic (lower bitrate ones) will work even with the shield is having one of its hissy fits.
Someone is to blame for this… Im still not sure who tho… Nvidia? Plex? Android?
Not sure if this helps, but when plex crashes on the nonpro tube version of the 2019 shield, if I exit the app after it restarts to go to the home screen I often get a notification that plex is still playing something in the background…

I’m on the latest beta…is this ever going to be fixed?
I can get through about 40-50 minutes in a ~70GB, ~60MB/s remux UHD remux of Casino before I start to have issues. The issues used to happen sooner, so I think SOMETHING has at least improved, but still needs more work.
I am slightly worried it is my server, but I do not believe that should be an issue with DirectPlay…both tautulli and plex dashboard show I am using DirectPlay, so I am wondering if I can rule the server out. I am running it on a DS118, so its just a barebones quad core ARM CPU. I am under the assumption this will be fine given my setup(my other front end player is ATV 4K and that does Direct Play on everything as well), but I can setup a proper i5 ubuntu server on an old mac mini I have.
just wanted to point out that I am also using a dts x audio passthrough. main reason I bought the shield tv was because ATV4k doesn’t support lossless Atmos/X soundtracks, but it so far has been a so-so investment. i’m gonna end up gifting it to a family member at some point and just buying the next ATV or a shield pro at some point if the issues continue
I have a very similar experience. It would be nice to hear from Plex staff on what is being worked or if there’s some permanent issue so I can either wait or move on with life.
It gets bad enough to completely lock up my shield to where I have to physically unplug it or wait upwards of 10 minutes.
Worst with frame rate matching but it happens either way. Always 4k content, not even the highest bitrate stuff.
For me a 80 Mbps movie frequently stops playing too on the OG Shield TV. Goddamn it, what do I use all of this for if I’m having issues with playback on every second movie? I’m just really fed up with this. We all have Gigabit Ethernet connections that are clearly multiple times faster than the bandwidth required, yet we can’t watch our movies without buffering issues.
I have the same issue with my Nvidia shield Tube. Some UHD movies/episodes just crash the entire system, the remote is completely ignored and I have to manually unplug the shield in order to restart it… Would be appreciated if Plex can acknowledge the issues and tell us if they are working on it
Plex did acknowledge this in a few other threads. They were actively working on it a month ago and released a few beta builds that supposedly “improved memory management” which is the achilles heel of the non-pro shield tube (2gb vs 3gb memory on the pro). Unfortunately those betas did not resolve the issue. Most of us sold our tubes and went with 2019 shield pros, I haven’t had a problem since I switched. (I know it sucks to have to upgrade tho)
Did you just sell on ebay? I am interested in getting the pro, just not sure what to do with my $150 paper weight once I do.
Also has anyone messed with Kodi at all? I’ve had good initial success with it, may just continue to use that.
I already have an apple tv which works perfectly with infuse, the only reason I ever got into this was for atmos passthrough. I may use kodi on the tube for my atmos/dtsx tracks and the apple tv for everything else
I’ve definitely tried kodi on the tube, and with the plex-addon it didn’t have any of the crashing or stuttering problems that the native plex app had. I’m going to sell mine to someone on ebay, hopefully they won’t want it for plex. I may even put a disclaimer. The tube is a good little device for netflix, prime, chromecasting and other normal uses. Just plex’s bloated app doesn’t play well with it.
I’m having the same issues, seemingly out of nowhere. 4K movies that used to played perfectly either no longer play at all, stutter, or crash out of the Plex App.
Shield TV App: 8.2
PMS: 1.19.4.2935 (public)
Again, last week all my 4K movies played perfectly, with the ability to skip chapters, or fast forward. As of last night, a new movie I added to the library simply refused to play, always crashing and restarting the app. I assumed there was something wrong with the new file, so I re-transcoded it, added it again to the library - still no joy.
Frustrated, I started testing movies I have already watched on the app, with the above results. The only thing I can remember doing is updating my PMS maybe five days ago, but that’s it.
UPDATE: I rebooted my server (dedicated Windows 10 machine), and there were some major pending updates, including the latest big update from Microsoft. After updating and rebooting, the 4K movies are playing fine now. Could have been the updates, could have been that the machine just needed a reboot, no idea.
if there are any devs reading this, please let me know what I can provide to help troubleshoot this issue.
with my plex tube, the issue has got better but still remains. by that I mean, in the past, about 20 minutes in I would have issues with a 4k HDR remux. last night, I made it through an hour of Gladiator before it started having issues. I was actually ready to make a post saying it was fixed, but then it started stuttering.
So this Gladiator is a fresh rip, and what a delightful soundtrack this was. I have attached the makemkv data, not sure if any of this is useful at all.

Also experiencing this. No issues with sub-4k content. 4k content will go ~15 minutes, then start dropping frames, Plex becomes less and less responsive (won’t pause or pausing takes 5-10seconds) the shield context menus won’t open, then it crashes. My server is showing only a 20% load sending me 4k content, and my Nvidia Tube Shield is using an ethernet connection.
In any event, were it JUST my server, surely Plex should be robust enough to not crash and simply jitter/stop playback.
I COULD upgrade to a pro, but I just bought this a week ago, seem like a real waste
If you only got it a week ago, seriously consider returning it and getting a pro before you’re outside of the return window and you’re stuck with it. Many of us have been waiting months for a fix. Instead we keep getting builds with more and more silly dvr features we could care less about. Save yourself the aggravation…
As I don’t really plan to do any serious gaming on the shield spending another $50 JUST for the Shield PRO because Plex can’t manage to code is a bit aggravating.
I haven’t tried this, but does Kodi+Plex work any better? What would be the downside?
EDIT: Trying Kodi+Plex. Had to disable the default setting to stop transcoding. Non HDR 4K handled alright.
EDIT: Currently stress testing Kodi+Plex. If it works I’ll just use that. Dumb Plex can’t make their own app work straight but looks ok
