Password protect Movies or Categories

Parental control is already in the devs agenda.

Well men put as priority 0000

I just wanted to add my two cents.  I have 5 children ranging from 3-15 and It would be very nice to have a Parental Control feature on Plex.  I love my Plex media server and that is all we use now.  We have completely gotten away from all disks (DVD's)  I will continue to keep using this but some way of controlling content or different accounts really needs to be added.  Thanks!!

I've just got into trouble with my wife because she caught the kids watching Riddick. My kids are 5 & 7 at the moment, when they become grandparents I'm sure this will be sorted but ideally the sooner would be better :) - just teasing!

Plex is awesome by the way, thanks for creating it!

I don't want my 4 year old accidentially watching the Walking Dead!

Now we have family sync

Are we any closer to give me a parental setup on plex

I agree, I think the best way would be per device, IE not allow certian section to play on certian devices. I am waiting on this to buy my plex pass. But I still love Plex and much love to Barkley

i've discovered that the solution to this is the following:

1)  segregate content on your server/storage device into separate folders (i.e. kid's movies, kid's TV shows, PG, PG-13, whatever you want)

2)  create a separate plex account for each user (or group of users) that you want to control what they have access to.

3)  "share" your plex server with each account, allowing them access only to the folders you deem appropriate for them.

4)  profit

this really only works if the children us one specific TV and you use another one.  i accept this as the price of admission myself.

for the individual above with 5 kids, this will take a while, but is do-able.  i have two young ones, so "kids movies" and "kids tv shows" are all they have access to at this point.

i've also created separate folders for "concerts", "home movies", "photos", etc., that i variably share with friends and family in other cities using the same method.

Given that Plex has the metadata, it would be ideal to have the ability to impose restrictions.

For example, share my library with others w/o any restrictions, but for local viewing require a PIN for content over rating NN. Or, take the Netflix approach and have profiles (but self select).

My use case: I have 3 kids (10-15) and there is content on my Movies/TV I don't want them seeing.

I don't want to have to manage my media differently; ideally all my stuff remains in the same place but I can have plex enforce the restrictions.

I would agree.  My kids are all almost old enough to be able to watch all the TV Shows and Movies we have on our server (our 17 year old has full access but we're still holding back on our 15 and 11yr olds).

I upgraded our server from the old Windows Home Server and was using a plugin with that which restricted content based on movie rating for each profile.  You wouldn't think it would be too difficult to do the same for Plex.  It's a great application and this is the only major feature I can see that it's missing for our needs.

I just started using Plex and I use a shared internet connection. To my horror, I found out that other Plex users on the same local area network can see my full library. Does Plex plan to implement any Library password protection in the near future?

I had tried to do the 'Require authentication on local networks' in myPlex settings but I've got the 'myPlex could not reach your server' issue that many other Plex users seem to run into. Days of messing around and I'm still lost.

Privacy/password options on media folder is surely an easy (ish) and very useful feature to implent?

Thanks everyone!

Any progress.?

We really need parental controls in Plex. Is there any progress to report?

just gonna trow in my idea7

My thought is base it on clients.

like my house

My kids have tablets. In the plex server setup I can actually assign what movies that client can access.

Example could be

Frozen everybody

300 Mom, Dad only based on the clients that can access that plex server

once the kids get older I could log into plex and reasign movies that my kids can watch.

one the kids tablet logs on to plex only the approved movies/tv shows will show up on there client.

almost thinking a seperate page that lists all the movies and clients, I can use a check box to say yes little jimmy can see this movie

This is the best thing I've found so far.  It works and isn't a hassle at all.

I too would love some Parental Control features added.  I've seen the myPlex work-around, while an ok work-around, it fails in one major regard.  When you do this method, Plex does not track Watched vs Un-Watched statuses.  While this is not a HUGE issue, it is kind of a bummer having to "hack" Plex for this functionality and then maintaining the library on the main server.

I was horrified today when I set up my plex server for the first time and what showed up on the 65" LCD screen (prominently displayed over my fire place) was long forgotten porn! What's worse is that I have no way to password protect that content.

I would like to be able to let friends and family look through my movie collection without things... err... popping up :D

I would also like to be able to easily access that content when the mood by the fire becomes romantic or even downright raunchy.

There has to be a way to password protect files from a specific directory.

Wow, hold the phone... I was working on a workaround using TrueCrypt when I discovered that Plex Home Theater dosn't have mouse support!

Really!?!?

Dealbreaker!

It seems that this company just isn't thinking clearly. <_<

Please Devs can you comment on the progress of a properly implemented set of Parental Controls. Work arounds are find if people are watching on different TVs/devices, but in our house the streaming only goes to one TV.

Here we are again, asking the Plex devs to add Parental Controls. It's the one thing holding me back from that Plex Pass I'm thinking about picking up...

I have a 17 yo, 7yo, and a 3 week old. The LAST thing I need is to come downstairs in the middle of the night and find my newborn on the couch, remote in hand, watching This Is The End. :)

Seriously, though, guys, this seems to be an oft-requested feature. The least we could do is have a dev reply to this thread and let us know if it's a pipe dream. We're just trying to look out for our kids.

Love Plex, and thanks for a great product!

Unfortunately I signed up for a life time Plex Pass without recognizing this significant short coming.

It's kind of disappointing that no one from Plex has responded to this as yet.

Does anyone know of any other comparable Media Server that have this feature?  At this point I think I would be willing to cut my losses and go with another product that works similarly but has given serious consideration to this or at least have the respect to at least respond their VIP subscribers.

Please advise ASAP...
