PGS and VOBSUB subtitles don't work

Hello guys!
I noticed that Plex freezes when I turn on subtitles in PGS or VOBSUB format on my LG B9 TV. How can I solve?

The server is on the nas

If your client (smart tv) cannot deal with image based subtitles such as PGS or VOBSUB, your server will try to burn those into the video (transcoding). NAS usually have relatively weak CPUs and might therefore fail to handle the transcoding.

As for how to resolve this issue, there’s basically 2 strategies:

1. Avoid the need to transcode

You could try to replace your image based subtitles with SRT subtitles or add a streaming device to your setup that’s able to deal with the image based subtitles (e.g. a Nvidia Shield, Apple TV, Roku…)

2. Beef up your server

Keep the NAS as storage and add a mini-PC with a more capable CPU to run the Plex Media Server (e.g. an intel NUC)

I thank you for the answer.
It works exactly as you said. I did some tests and the problem is the LG B9 client does not recognize PGS and VOBSUB subtitles. Furthermore, the Nas processor does not have enough power to perform the transcoding.

I tried to install the server on a pc connected to the Nas and everything works perfectly. But I don’t want to keep the pc on all the time …
Since I don’t even want to spend the money to buy a device, the cheapest solution is to convert subtitles (PGS and VOBSUB) to SRT. Is it a simple procedure?
Why should I first extract the subtitle in VOBSUB from the movie and then convert it to SRT. If the procedure is too cumbersome I forget it .

You can check if you find matching subtitles e.g. on opensubtitles.org.
Alternatively there’s apps like Subtitle Edit that’ll extract the subtitle images and apply text recognition to transfer them into SRT. This will certainly take some time and might require manual intervention to correct mismatches…
