Photos and videos in the same library

Photos and videos are two completely different types of media, not sure why anyone would want them mixed together in the same library. Don’t count on this ever being an option lol

Don’t you think it makes sense to have all the “Dad’s Birthday 2015” related files in one place regardless of their media types?

Yes to me makes perfect sense. Now I have to jump with lots of clicks to see first photos and then videos of same event.

It would be extremely helpful to have them be shown together, or making an EVENT type

Sorry, Absolutely not. When I’m in the mood to watch dad’s birthday videos I don’t want still images mixed in there just making things messy when I am there to view videos. If I feel like looking at photos then I know where they are, nice and neat together in a photo library. That is what makes sense. Also as moviefan stated the way the media is presented in the library. Photos or photos and videos are videos. This is why plex allows multiple libraries containing your media to keep things nice and neat and well organized. I don’t see that changing.

No way.

In my Mederer I have both photo and video in same and watch both. Would like to have the same feature in Plex

I respectfully disagree with you on this question. It does make sense having different library types for movies and TV Shows. You might want to watch a movie and you will most likely only watch one or at most a couple of movies, or you follow a TV-show and are not interested in any other media content for the time being.

But Home Videos and Pictures and consumed using a different behaviour. You can collectively call them Memories, that is saved moments of you family and friends or any other person/place of interest. The format of that memory is not that relevant. So if I would like to show my last trip to Crete this summer, I want to show my saved memories that happens to be stored in the format of videos and pictures in a chronological order. You are most likely taking both pictures and videos at the same location, there is no need to split them up in different categories just for the sake of it.

There is a reason why both Android and iOS “Photos app” contains both pictures and videos, because that’s how we consume that media. These apps are developed by multi billion dollar companies having spent millions in market research, user experience and analysing consumer behaviour.

So as a summary

I want to watch “Movies”, “TV-Shows”, “listen to Music” or "relieve my Memories”. Thats at least how I believe most people like to consume their media.

I just want to add that Emby has this functionality “mixed content”. It’s just to bad the the service is a bit buggy and some weird behaviour in some cases.

So I’m stuck between a perfectly working Plex that has everything I need except mixed libraries and Emby that at least for now is a little bit to buggy for my taste.

But anyone else missing this functionality with Plex could have a go at Emby and try your luck.

well said. A memory or event is something that contains both videos and photos. Strange that not everyone agrees on this.

We all do video and photos at a birthday party … why would you put videos and photos separately, and be so difficult to switch between the two places???

Here is a use case where mixed photos and videos is inconvenient: While I’m working around the house, I’ll start a music playlist, then a photo slideshow. So I have music playing, and I can occasionally look at the screen to enjoy photos. If there were videos with sound mixed in with the photos, I would occasionally be interrupted by a video competing with the music.

I have no objection to allowing mixed media libraries. If Plex did allow mixed media, it wouldn’t affect me anyway, because I simply don’t organize my media that way. I have always stored photos and videos in different folders.

Has there been any traction on this feature? I’d love for Plex to replace iCloud Photo Library for mobile syncing.

… almost 2 years ago, i came up with an similar / identical request - nothing happens :frowning:

it’s still my (almost  ) only frustration with plex. Especially because the file upload from my mobile app also only uploads the images and no movies :frowning:

+1
Apple’s Photo application has a date base collection where images and photos are in the same place.
Also, Plex’s ios app allow you to upload your camera content, but this work only for images. So it make sense to me to upload videos.

thanx riccanicola. Don’t forget to vote, that is taken into account to define priorities

Yes, that’s right

Always like the first post to “up vote” a feature

Done

I liked the first post and completely agree. I really don’t understand why you would object to this. It would simply be another library type of mixed. Then it would scan and pick up video and photos. Those who don’t want to do that can continue on their happy way using the existing library types.

What I don’t really get is why it would be so technically difficult. I’m pretty new to Plex and don’t fully understand the architecture yet, but just about every other experience on every other device manages to either show a picture or start to play the video as you scroll through the folder. Seems like Plex is the only software I have ever seen that does NOT…

+1 please!!!

I have a large home media library organized by year, quarter, and individual folders that go with particular events such as a birthday, trip, wedding, and so on. It includes photos and video. I was surprised when videos seemed to be missing from the library.

So, I Googled and found this thread. I am commenting because I unfortunately I see (what appears to be) Plex support belittling people in this forum saying that this will not be considered, is expected behavior, and that people should adapt. This is a juvenile response, and completely unacceptable from an organization that is selling a product. Other services that let you publish home-generated media, e.g. SmugMug, Picasa, iPhoto, have clearly gone the direction of showing different types of content together. And I am definitely not going to separate out the video into a parallel library just so that it can be served up by my Plex server.

This is a shortcoming of Plex and should be treated as such. It’s not a big shortcoming, but it’s kind of annoying as it prevents me from using Plex to look at all my home media at this time. I hope Plex will consider implementing this feature, however low priority or difficult it may be. There is no valid rationalization for not considering it at all, especially when people keep asking for it. Surely you guys are clever enough to build it. Thanks in advance!

In the first place, no Plex employees have commented in this thread.

In the second place, I see people disagreeing on the usefulness of this feature request, but I see no “belittling” anywhere, nor anyone saying it will not be considered. @MovieFan.Plex (not an employee, but a knowledgeable user) has explained the technical difficulty involved, in an attempt to set our expectations. He indicated that it is unlikely to be high on the priority list, and why. I see nothing “juvenile” here.

Like you said, no employees have commented yet… please Plex, consider this feature.

+2, So annoying its not possible
