Play All Movie Files In A Folder?

Server Version#: 1.18.2.2029
Player Version#: 3.104.2
Windows 10

a couple of questions:

  1. i have a bunch of movie shorts (3-5 minutes long) in a folder that i would like to play consecutively, or randomly, without having to manually select the next one once the previous one finishes, obviously this setting is somewhere within plex but i just can’t seem to find it, any help would be appreciated!

  2. how do i disable the “resume playback” screen and instead always have the movie automatically start from the beginning? again, i’m sure this is lurking somewhere in the plex settings but i just can’t seem to find it.

thanks!

Try putting them in a Collection. The Collection has a Play button, and if we’re lucky you just hit that to play every item in the Collection.

Assuming ‘Auto-Play’ is enabled, in a perfect world, upon completion of an item, a countdown timer should ensue, then the next item will play - we hope. Probably take about 4 to 6 minutes to find out if it works.

Edit the item (or group of items), Tags/Create a Collection and everything selected will be put in it. Add to the Collection via the item’s edit/tags section - the Collection you created will now be in the Collections list to choose from.

Edit the Collection (once created) , Advanced/sort by release date or alpha. <—your items may not have release dates… dunno.

@ JuiceWSA, thanks for the post…

went ahead and did this but am not thrilled with the results… first, for whatever reason some of the files in the collection will play back to back without returning to the info page for a next up countdown (which is great), while other files won’t play until after the up next countdown… is there any way to get them all to play back to back without a countdown?

second, it seems that the only way to access a collection is from the folder it resides in rather than it showing up in the left panel like “playlists”… am i missing something here, is there a way to show collections in the left navigation bar?

also, switching gears, per my original post is there any way to bypass or disable the “resume playback” page when selecting a movie so that the movie simply launches and plays from the beginning? i never have a need to pick up where i left off on a movie.

thanks!

Sorry for the delay - it’s the Holiday Gaming Fest - this year is good ol’ Company of Heroes 2.

Not that I am aware, nor can you pin Collections or groups thereof to the Home Screen. You can filter for Collections at the library level - showing them all - you can also ‘Edit’ the Collection and employ the ‘Sort Title’ for individual collections to put them first in the list at the library level. <— image below

Mark your Movie Library as ‘Played’ or ‘Unplayed’ or change the Watched State for individual titles - you have a title in a partially watched state, or you wouldn’t get the ‘Resume’ page.

that sounds like a bug: @OttoKerner may be able to confirm…
(a partially watched item might not proceed without issue - this too may be a bug - mark everything in that Collection ‘played or unplayed’ and report your findings)

Here’s how we do it at my house:

My Collections have a ‘Sort Title’ like “001” through “099”, for instance, with a 5 number skip between each one to make a place for a new Collection, or to fiddle with existing Collections to get them in the right place.

i see how to hover over a title to mark it as watched, but i don’t see how to mark an entire library as watched, which of course i would rather do given marking titles one by one is too big a task… moreover doesn’t this process just reset the title(s) once, and i’ll be right back to where i started once i play the title again and stop it before finishing?

what i’m looking for is a way to always have every title start from the beginning, regardless if i finish watching it or not, and never to see the resume dialog again… i’m assuming there’s code that triggers this behavior after x amount of seconds or minutes, do you happen to know to edit that code so it doesn’t trigger the behavior?

yeah, whatever is going on isn’t allowing me to watch consecutive files in a folder, uninterrupted… as mentioned, i have a folder with a lot of pixar shorts. and i would like themm to play one after another without requiring any user input or seeing the silly countdown clock, doesn’t seem like too much to ask?

very nice, looks great, but not what i’m looking for unfortunately… it would be great if i could create a folder on my pc and simply populate it with shortcuts to “favorite” movies, have plex scan it successfully, and have it appear in the left pane, alas…

I’m not seeing a ‘global’ switch on a library either, but perhaps there’s a super-secret-power-user trick I am unaware of… and there is… keep reading.

You could, at least, “select” large groups of Movies, Genres, for instance, by drilling for and bringing up a Genre, Selecting the first one (little circle upper left), then Selecting the last one while holding down Shift, then hit the Pencil at the top of the page and mark all those played or unplayed.

Note: If you happened to have included a ‘Collection’ in that ‘Group’ you Selected, you won’t get your Pencil - You’ll get the hang of it - eventually.

Edit - This Just In:
You can go to the Movies Library, Click ‘Recommened’, Find Continue Watching - that ‘should’ show all movies in progress, Select all of those and mark accordingly. <—or use that method to find them when you want to Continue Watching them.

Aye-Aye… if the ‘work-around’ above doesn’t suit you - don’t leave movies half played - as Plex is designed with no Movie Play State Consideration AT ALL the day they took Movies out of On Deck and put them into Continue Watching <—that ALSO contains TV Shows. <—with a whopping 3 slots.

The Moral of this story is - watch movies from start to finish, like Plex Devs do.

Unfortunately.

don’t like the moral of the story at all, especially since other frontends have no problem doing this, but i do like and appreciate your very helpful responses!

I hear ya.

It’s really not a bad “Drill” to Recommended/Continue Watching. (See Note)
I am absolutely certain that is the way Plex wants us to deal with Partially Watched Movies - as there doesn’t appear to be ANY other way.

Consider it a Movie On Deck - you have to Drill For.

Note:
If you consider the 31 clicks it takes on my Roku to “Drill for Westerns” - the dozen or so to get to 'Movies/Recommened/Continue Watching is as easy as falling off a log. <—that was kind of a joke, in a weird, reality bites kinda way.
