Plex 1.8.1 does NOT fix ANY of the DVR Bugs

I have all of the bugs listed here:

  1. stuck recordings requiring restart of plex
  2. unable to edit or delete the filter for transcoding of all episodes
  3. periodic hard crashes
  4. periodic, as in 5 or more times a day, need to manually restart plex
  5. stuck tuners in the interface but no active tuners on the HD Homerun resulting in missed recordings.

I happened to notice last night clicking around that version 1.8.1 is available for download so I upgraded my 1.7.5 version hoping it resolve some of these issues.

In short it did not. In fact, I actually have new issues now:

  1. the scattered recordings noted above have now been replaced with NO successful recordings since I installed the new plex 1.8.1 this morning.
  2. rather than the full mkv files recording that were typically between 500mb and 1.5gb I know have “.ts” files at about 80mb in size that are unplayable.

I’ll post an update later today, but after about 3 hours of using 1.8.1 I’m already considering downgrading because it went from buggy 1.7.5 to not working at all with 1.8.1.

I use the latest (1.8.1.4139 ) and I only restart my plex when I upgrade which is once every week or maybe 2.
I have no stuck recordings, have you verified connectivity to your HDHR is stable?
I have no crashes but I am also running on linux.

None of those issues with Plex. I’m on the latest (via Docker).

The only minor annoyance is Plex still doesn’t record sound for (UK) ITV HD (Channel 103) so I have to record SD ITV (003).

1.81 has been rock solid for me except for the issue that I can’t record more then 3 shows at once . . .

The connection to the tuner was solid in 1.7.5. I have hundreds of successful recordings. Since installing 1.8.1 today I have had 0 successful recordings. I mainly record 30 min shows for the kids on PBS so I have about 4 opportunities per hour ( I have two PBS channels) so in the last 8 hours I am 0 for 32.

Did any of you / are there any specific upgrade items I should have done in going from 1.7.5 to 1.8.1?

I’ve been monitoring the .grab folder, the plex gui and my TV Library and all I’ve been getting is broken files, barely partial recordings, complete inability to transcode and complete failure to release the tuners when a show has finished “recording”.

Believe me I want 1.8.1 to be rock solid. I really like the DVR feature but at the moment it is not working at all.

If everyone else is having luck with 1.8.1 it might be the latest firmware update to the HD home run.

I applied this firmware update.

Hardware Model HDHR4-2US
Firmware Version 20170815

Maybe this is the problem?

Is anyone running this firmware update and running 1.8.1 with success?

I’m still continuously finding partial shows in my recorded files in 1.8.1 (yes, allow partial airings is off and the tuner should be assigned to that task for the entire period). I have to go through my recordings every evening to remove partials. I still find hung recordings at 100% occasionally, but not as often since I have a scheduled task restart PMS every morning. I haven’t observed any hard crashes in 1.8.1 as of yet, but I’m not holding my breath.

Basically I haven’t seen any improvements nor any detriments since the upgrade to 1.8.1; my experience has been relatively the same throughout 1.7 and now into 1.8.

Ive never had issues with partial recordings since beta DVR was released.
Ive never had an issue with hard crashes or having to schedule a daily restart.

I also run docker so a linux distro and it runs for weeks at a time until I upgrade with no issues.
I do also write to a cache disk which is SSD and nightly gets copied over to non SSD so write speeds are increased.
I have 16Gig of Ram and AMD-A6-6400 @ 3900 so nothing beefy at all and I can do 3 recordings at a time no problem while still streaming something from the server.

Maybe you need to be looking at your architecture and underlying OS?!?!

Like I said, I’ve successfully completed hundreds of recordings with 1.7.5. OS, hard drive, ram etc not a problem. The problems I listed are well documented by many users in these forums and across the web and acknowledged by plex. My note is that the beta in 1.7.5 has these issues and so too does 1.8.1. For me using the same hardware that had intermittent issues with 1.7.5, 1.8.1 has had basically no successful recordings in almost 24 hours. Same hardware, same OS, same hard drives, same tuner.

Only two things have changed:

  1. HD Homerun had a firmware update which I installed, perhaps foolishly
  2. I upgraded plex from 1.7.5 to 1.8.1

Before these two things I had 80 to 90% success rate on recording. After these two changes I have 0% success rate.

They sent out messages to all of us telling us that DVR is out of beta and is now final. If this is the final version, they may want to reconsider and go back to beta.

My questions still stands, has anyone upgraded the firmware on their HD Homerun and had success recording using plex 1.8.1?

Yes I have had almost 40 successful recordings using 1.8.1. 8 Recordings today with the latest HDHR firmware. My only issue is not being able to record more than 2 shows at a time. A Plex Ninja has diagnosed the issue using logs and config information I sent him and forwarded to Plex Engineering for investigation. From what I have been told they have replicated the issue on their systems and will be working on a fix. When that fix will be released is anyone’s guess.

Good to know they may already be working on a fix.

I have watched plex and all the relevant directories right at the time recordings were to start. Plex would keep starting the recording. It would fail for some reason and then it would start again. Lather rinse repeat. This would happen 20 or 30 times before it finally stopped.

I had several “successful” recordings in that a file was produced, it was transcoded and I could play it. However each of these recordings was on the order 15 seconds to 2 minutes in length…like the start and stop issue I described above might suggest.

As a final check when the recordings would fail, I launched the HD Homerun TV Viewer app and was able to tune the correct channel and watch the shows in perfect crystal clear reception.

At least once when I did this, plex started recording the show. It could have been coincidence, but maybe plex is having trouble changing channels on my tuner for some reason.

I’ve also scanned the logs and my untrained eye doesn’t see anything obvious there.

I USED to have the problems described…but that was with the older 1.7x code, which never seemed to work correctly.

For me, running on a pretty robust PC, things have vastly improved with 1.8x. The only issue (mentioned already in this post string) is it only can record using one of the two HDHomeRun Connect tuners on the network.

The stuck and incomplete recordings went away with 1.8x. (I did have an issue recording one channel, but that was the broadcaster not meeting ATSC standards, not Plex)

Sounds like you should wait for the next NEXT release…or consider the ultimate step of a total reinstall. If you do that, jot down your recording schedule, as that will be cleared. Don’t re-import anything regarding old settings.

I tired rbkirk suggestion of doing a fresh install.

At first it seemed like that worked, within the first 4 recordings i had two successful, whereas previously I had no successful 1.8.1 recordings.

However after that the exact same behavior persists:

  • stuck tuners in web gui
  • incomplete files or no files in the grab folder
  • files that do get written are written as ts files rather than mkv
  • no active tuners on the HDHR even though the web interface says it is recording two shows
  • plex transcoder running at 350% of processor, but it isn’t transcoding anything.

Oh well, a fresh install was worth a try.

I’m going to try downgrading. If 1.7.5 doesn’t work as well as before, maybe that points to the HDHR firmware update as the problem.

I had to rollback to an earlier version of PMS as well. PMS 1.8.1 would crash frequently on my Synology DS1815+ NAS. I suspect the crashes were triggered by scheduled recordings 100% of the time since the few days of running 1.8.1 yielded no recordings.

IIRC, PMS 1.8.0 worked well but to on the safe side I rolled back to 1.7.6.

I may update to 1.8.0 soon but I would like to have a successful couple of days of DVR recordings first. I would like to have the Apple TV / Plex Live TV support that PMS 1.8.x provides but honestly it needs so much improvement that it might not make a difference at this point.

Edit:

While PMS 1.8.1 didn’t work properly on my Synology DS1815+ NAS running DSM 6.1.3-15152 Update 3, PMS 1.8.1 seems to work fine on my Windows Server 2012 Essentials box.

I haven’t done the HDHR upgrade and I’m having the same issues with no recordings working in current version of PLEX. It started when I upgraded from 1.75 to 1.80. I also will downgrade.

Slysmith let me know if downgrading works for you.

I’m starting to fear that the HD Homerun firmware update has sunk me entirely.

This weekend I did a clean install with 1.8.1 and had the same results as my original post.

Today I did a clean install with 1.7.5 and I am still having the same unreliable results.

The only thing I have left is to conclude that perhaps the HD Homerun firmware update created some serious incompatibilities with plex. In my quick research it looks like it may not be possible to downgrade the firmware update on the HD Homerun so we may be in a bad spot for the foreseeable future.

I have lastest HDHomerun Firmware update and its working fine on my systems, I do have problem with plex 1.7+ to current release not working properly with their new chunked logic and recording taking hours beyond the normal program time. but even with 1.6.1 all my recordings work fine with latest Homerun Firmware. Even before the firmware this issue started with plex 1.7 series logic change to chunked recordings. I don’t think your problem is the firmware but with plex dvr logic.

Unfortunately I downgraded to 1.7.2 with no better results. Still getting recordings hanging at 100% with continuous transcoding. Again, I have not upgraded HDHR firmware. I agree with above statement that the issue is with the Plex DVR logic.

one really big shortcomming of how plex handles silicon image tuners in my estimation is they are not tracking each individual tuner by thier IDs…

for example… I have a HDHR-US dual ATSC tuner… each tuner has an ID number and since the unit has dual antenna inputs for 2 seperate antennas… I can point them at different towers… and with silicon images software can indipendantly scan for channels and build channel lists independantly … that way I can keep only strong channels on their respective tuners…

plex doesnt do any of that and just treats the device as a single entitly…

dragonmel, you could “fix” some of that by restricting the available channels on each tuner…subdividing channels so both tuners are not a duplicate of each other, the appropriate strong channels to separate tuners.

Running with the latest 20170815 firmware from Silicondust, the latest version of Plex Version 1.8.1.4139, a pretty powerful PC (Xeon based from spare parts I had), I’ve only one real issue remaining…the DVR won’t use both of my HDHomerun Connect units on the subnet, it uses only one. Everything else has gotten MUCH better.

Other minor things I have done…

Using my router, I’ve assigned IP addresses by MAC address…so the tuners and Plex server never get a different local IP address in network
