Server Version#: 1.31.0.6654
Player Version#: Windows 1.62.2.3451
I have installed PMS on my Synology DS920+ and am having an issue where, seemingly randomly, all signed-in Plex apps (Android, Plexamp, app.plex.tv, HTPC) are unable to see the server running on the Synology. I have another PMS running on a Windows 10 PC and it does not have this problem.
I initially installed PMS on the Synology using the installer from Plex, not in Package Center but I later read that there are some issues with running PMS this way (plus hardware transcoding does not work) so I reinstalled PMS with Docker following the instructions here: DSM 7 + Packaging 2.0 + Docker -- The How-To.
The problem, however, persists. My initial fix was to have PMS service/docker container restart but as I was tinkering I found that I can access the server via IP address and it was running normally; all media present and functioning. I was also able to set the Manual Connections in the Plex Android app and on the Windows HTPC app. This allowed the media to be accessed but did not work for a remote connection. Upon further tinkering, I discovered that when the Plex apps could not see the PMS if I were to access Plex via IP and change a server setting like Enable Relay or enter an URL into the Custom server access URLs field and save, all the Plex apps would then be able to see the server and everything would be working as it should…until the next time.
Has anyone else run into this and/or know of a permanent fix? From what I can tell, the PMS is timing out or dropping its connection to the Plex authentication servers (or whatever servers Plex hosts to handle this info). Any help is appreciated.
Running PMS in Docker on Synology was created to give us HW transcoding with HW tone mapping BEFORE it was native to the package.
You don’t need to fuss with any of that anymore.
ALSO, that specific example, using the GUI won’t give you access to HW transcoding unless you run the command line version (AKA, the now obsolete one)
Where does your current server instance data reside?
I don’t know where you heard PMS 1.29.2.6364 from Package Center doesn’t work as expected. It is well known PMS 1.21.0.3744 (The DSM 7.0 BETA package had issues which has since been obsoleted and removed)
Is it in the proper “/PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server”
If so , you can install PMS 1.29.2.6463 from Package Center
Thank you for the quick response. My server instance data is located in /PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server. I did run the command line version of the instructions but I was not aware that there were obsolete. That said, should I only be running the version of PMS from Package Center or can I use the newer version provided on the plex.tv downloads?
Also, I have had PMS running on the Synology (not Docker) and still had the issue of all the Plex apps “losing” the server; it is only visible via IP address until I either restart the service or make a setting change that communicates to Plex.tv (I think that’s what it’s doing, but I’m not sure) while managing the server in Plex Web.
I will downgrade to PMS 1.29.2.6463 in Package Center for the purpose of testing and report back if my issue persists.
I downgraded to the current version of PMS in Package Center, 1.29.2.6364. Within 12 hours I lost visibility to my media on all Plex apps. As stated previously, web still worked and once I made a setting change that communicated with Plex.tv all my apps could see and connect to the PMS instance. It’s been nearly 24 hours since that happened and I haven’t experienced the issue again; it could be a couple more days before it happens or it could be in the next few minutes…
In the almost two weeks since my last post I have lost connectivity to PMS four or five times. Would logs be helpful? Are there specific logs I should be looking at or something specific in the logs I should be looking for? Any help is appreciated.
As posted, I’ve downgraded and am running PMS 1.29 from Package Center and am still having the server “disappear” to all Plex apps. Any ideas on settings that can be changed to fix this?
Uninstall the package with the KEEP (first button) option
Reinstall again but use the Plex Claim Token option
– Click the “Get Plex Claim Token” link and COPY the token
– Return to the install page and PASTE it in the box.
– Click NEXT NEXT DONE
– Let it install (take a few seconds longer)
When it’s done, it’ll confirm your userename and email address
Now restart all players (plex/web included – which is Control + F5 key)
I followed the instructions here and the problem returned within a few hours. I then again uninstalled but instead chose the second option to sign out and unclain the server. Logged in and claimed with the token but again the problem persisted. I walked away from it for a few days then as I was looking around in one of the apps (don’t remember which one) I noticed my other PMS instance on my Windows 10 PC was not visible but the PMS on the Synology was. I restarted the Windows server and then the Synology server disapeared. From here, since I didn’t really use the Windows server anyway I just uninstalled/deleted it and restarted the Synology PMS and have not had an issue since. I have no desire to dig into why the two servers were conflicting with eachother but wanted to share that that seems to have been the problem; hopefully if someone else runs into a similar issue this can help.
