Plex crashes so frequently

I just recently bought Shield TV 2017. I configured plex media server and the DVR capability of recording of OTA channels. I quesiton is I noticed that the plex client or media server just crashes so frequently. Lot of time it's just when I go to watch current program. Some time when I click on watch it just speens and then eventually error about try again. when I do try again majority of time it works. This is so frustrating. Can someone tell me how to fix this issue? I have tried both uninstalling update on plex client and plex media server and re-configured everything but still the same issue.

Also, are we going to be able to watch program that is recording and when you watch live that you can click go back and forward anytime soon or before the football season. This feature is so important to call it a full DVR capability.

Somewhere I have read that you can look at log but I am not so sure where to look or what?

I hope this aspect of plex is polished up and it would be a cool DVR software.

What pms version do you use? When I was running the official pms (1.7.4), pms crashed several times when using the DVR feature. I updated to the 1.8.1 beta version and I did not get a single crash since. So maybe you can get this a try. You need to register to get the beta version.

For the client, version 6.4 was release yesterday. Give it a try.

Thanks for your reply.

Man I just need something stable at this point that works. Wife is giving me hell for me making move with the Shield TV and plex dvr solution by cutting cord. Did not realize lot of basic features are still missing (rewind, pause, forward the live program, watch while recording, grid like guide, etc... ). Hope the plex developers get that going soon before football season.

I have pms (1.7.4) running and the client is 6.3.4.1485.

I will give 1.8.1 beta a try and I will post my comments as to how it goes. thanks.

You will get time shift with 1.8.1. Still missing though watch while recording.

Also, client 6.4 is out. So checkout Google play app for updates.

Edit : in 1.8.1, video container for recording is back to ts.

So, I updated to the beta versions for both PMS (1.8) and PMC (6.4) as you suggested. Unfortunately, I still got one of those error when you click on watch live. Error occurred try again/close app type of error.

Is there anything I can do to fix this. Also, where do I go to look at the logs? I believe I have the option turned on to send the log to developer for trouble shooting but please remind me exactly where I can do that to make sure.

To get the server's logs:
On the web interface, settings/server/help.

Click on download logs. You will get a zip file with several logs in it. Start with plex media server logs.

My current PMS version is (1.9.2.4385) and PMC (6.5.3.2115) on Nvidia shield. I was enrolled in early access program but withdrawn from it as I am having quite a bit of trouble with play back or recording. Whenever I play anything recorded quits or freezes after 5 to 10 minutes. So, I can not count on anything that is recorded. becoming really frustrating. Media server crashes with errors like my media server is running slower or something.

How do I get back to latest and stable version?

#8

Do you have the Shield pro?

If you have the 16g version, do you use an adopted storage?

#9

I have the 16G Shield and yes I use the attached USB drive (WD 1TB usb 3.0) for recording. Internal storage available is 6gb.

#10

Did you look at the server logs?

My guess is that you run out of internal memory. I have a pro version, I run the same versions and it's quite stable.

Did you try to change the transcoder temp folder to your external hard drive?

You may try to adopt a fast USB 3.0 hard drive and use it as internal memory. However, you need to be aware that nvidia and plex do not provide a way to move the database and the metadata on a adopted drive yet.

#11

My external hard drive is WDBYNN0010BBK USB 3.0 western digital. Is this not that fast? Which one do you recommend?
I try to get path so that I can change transcoder temp folder. However, with es-file explorer, I only see one path and location as internal storage. It tells me that I have only 13% used (121G out of 960.85g Internal storage). This includes both internal and external storage. The second "USB2003" is 0% used.
So, some of my shows works and some do not as far as playing back. I just can not rely on the recording.

Lastly, I am lost in so many log files. Which one should I be looking for in perticular? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
By the way, the PMS version I have installed, is that stable released version?

#12

Your external hard drive should be fast enough.

Yes, you are on the latest public (stable) release.

For the logs, you need to look at the plexMediaServer logs.

#13

Spatemp, 6GB free internal not enough. I put a 64GB sd card as internal. Much more stable.

#14

Bob_H, My 2017 Nvidia shield does not have sd card slot. But as it seems to me the connected 1TB hard drive has become part of internal storage. May be I am confused on this.

Thank you all for answering my questions.

Another issue and quick question.

So, for last couple of days I could not even watch live tv and my recording stopped completely.

Finally I noticed under settings, server, live tv & dvr that my WinTV-dualHD tuner says device not found. I am not so sure how it disappeared. So, I went ahead and added again and scanned all of the local OTA channels again.

My question is , how can I backup my recording schedule so that I can easily restore. I would hate to loose that in the event something like this happens again. So, for now I have two tuners listed. If I delete the one that is not recognized, will I loose any of my recording schedule?

#16

Why is this keeps disappearing. Any idea? I just added and scanned all channels just few days ago.

Tuner is working and watching live channels. But last time it stopped recording all scheduled programs.

Your crashing issue maybe because you are using the 16GB version. Even if you add adoptable storage, the Plex databse is stored on the inetrnal 16GB storage only. If you have a large database, your internal storage can get used up, causing problems, especially if transcoding (recording or playing).

I'm not familair enough with the WinTV devices - do they plug directly into the Shield, or are they on another machine somewhere on your network?

#18

yooshaw,

yes it plugs directly on to usb port in back. plex will recognize it when u click on add device and you can scan over the air channels. however for some reason live channel does not. it would be nice to have both options.

I have the Pro version and it crashes all the time with this error message “Playback has stopped because the connection to the Plex Server has been lost. Please ensure the server is available and retry.”

henrooo,

WOW am I glad you jumped in and posted a Shield Pro giving the connection lost message. Everyone keeps pointing the finger at the 16GB model as the problem.
