I am moving my Plex server from the onboard Plex functions of my Netgear x 10 Nighthawk router (R9000) (and attached USB drives) to a Synology 1019+ NAS. I would like to be able to copy all the metadata as well as the Plex information related to the movies I changed (meta-data still?). For example I have several versions of certain films (Star Wars) and have them split with their own posters, etc…
I want to know if this was doable or not. I see other information about other set-ups but have not seen anything about moving this from the router I am using.
If you have shell level access to where PMS keeps its metadata ( Library or Plex Media Server ) then a tar or ZIP will allow you to transport it into the Synology.
The Plex share contains Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server
The general procedure for you should be:
Stop PMS on both
On R9000 create the ZIP / tar image of the metadata directory
Copy that to the top of the Plex share on the Synology (where you see Library )
Rename Library to Library.orig
Un-tar / unzip the imported metadata
Correct the structure to exactly mimick ( Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server)
Right-click on this new Library -> Properties. New owner = plex and apply “this folder, subfolders and files”
Thanks much. The Plex files are located on one of the attached hard drives to router so it should not be an issue accessing those. I will be doing this soon so I may have a few follow-up questions but I appreciate the quick response.
I have my media on the NAS now and I have a few clarifying questions for you if I can.
First on the Hard Drive connected to the Netgear router I have the Plex files in the following directory: Y:\Library\Application Support\Plex Media Server. Inside the Plex Media Center Folder is the metadata folder. Do I just copy that folder or do I also include other folders?
Second can you clarify how I correct the structure on the Synology NAS? I have not installed Plex yet on the Synology NAS. Does the folder structure simply need to be the same above?
Thanks. I am installing the 64-bit version of Plex for Synology. I downloaded the spk from the plex website. It has been installing for the past 30 minutes. Is that normal? How long should it take?
Edit:
So it has been over an hour now. I had changed the settings per Q3 to add Plex’s package signing public key to Synology NAS Package Center. I see activity on the download side of the lan connection. CPU/RAM usuage are very low (2%-5%). I assumed it would install faster so I am not sure if I am being impatient or just need to let it do its thing.
I did refresh. I am not sure what is happening. Plex does not appear to be installed.
To be specific I clicked on the Manual Install , selected the 64-bit synology package off my computer and then clicked next. After that it says “Processing. Please Wait,” but never advances to the next stage. I tried it several times now and it appears to be stuck. I tried downloading the software again, thinking it was a bad download. Do I need to install the older package first from the Synology Package center then update?
So I switched switched to Chrome and I see that it is uploading (I assume to the NAS) but it is very slow for some reason. Do I need to change a router setting to allow certain ports on the synology? Could I manually copy the plex file to the nas and load from there?
I am not sure when you mean check the 1. User plex and 2. Share Plex?
Well it may be my router…it seems to be messing with my upstream connection after an update tonight. Even copying a file is very slow. I will need to work on fixing that first it appears.
I figured out the issue I was having. I have an x299 motherboard with 2 lan ports, one of which is a 10Gb port. I had recently disconnected my computer and when reconnecting I plugged the cable in the 10Gb port and not the regular lan port. It had been working ok but apparently stopped working. I plugged my network cable in the other lan port and all is good.
For some reason it was limiting the upload speed of any file copied from the computer to a network device. It was painfully slow and essentially timed out. That was causing the issues in installing Plex from my local computer.
I followed your guide and now have my Plex server on my NAS. I was able to port over all the data so I am very happy. Thanks for sticking with me and for the advice.
