Plex don't start anymore

I gave the command sudo systemctl status plexmediaserver

I i think the result was good:

Plex looks to be active

So, on the browser (Chrome) i insert http:/ i i receive the error .. not able tonnect the server.

Now, i don't know where to look for "Settings - Server - Help - Download Logs" ... in PMS ? or in the Browser?

Open your browser and go to This is your Dashboard. Now go to Settings - Server - Help and Download Logs.

It will present you with a ZIP file which you upload here with your next reply.

I am sorry but if i open the browser and go to i obtain what you anc se in the attachement. I think you mean to go in Setting-Server in PMS when it works... not in the settings of the Chrome browser.. there is no SEtting/server there...

What is in file /etc/systemd/system/plexmediaserver.service.d/local.conf

Here below the content of that file..

If you can inform the writer of that post, it is incorrect is used for Debian systems, NOT Ubuntu 16.

The Jessie repo is currently unusable, but not for the reason you state.

It is currently unusable for any purpose because it does not contain a current PMS package. The package version it currently holds is, which we all know by now can no longer be used due to the way Plex currently handles codecs, a decision they made that forced a mandatory upgrade to 1.5.1 or higher.

Historically, when that repo was usable, it was perfectly valid for use on Ubuntu because the packages it provided were bit for bit identical to Ubuntu packages. And the reason that repo was provided was because, at the time, did not provide a debian style repo for their Ubuntu packages. That is to say, @yakumo made that repo available as a convenience to PMS users who desired a debian style repo for use on any distribution that could use the Ubuntu package provided by

Duplication causes errors.

thanks for the answer,
i removed the copy and now /etc/systemd/system/plexmediaserver.service.d/local.conf is:

I lunched PMS but i got the same error :-(

Please use journalctl -xe | grep -i plex or journalctl -xe and manually scan through the output to see the specific error being reported. SystemD does not always log it.

with journalctl -xe i got the following lines in red (i think they are errors)

Device: /dev/sda [SAT], 7 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors

Warning via /usr/share/smartmontools/smartd-runner to root produced unexpe
Cannot start "/usr/sbin/sendmail": executable not found (adjust sendmail

with journalctl -xe | grep -i plex i got the following_

Anything in Red is an error.

  1. Your hard drive is failing. You must address this first.
  2. The other 'error' regarding Plex is not an error. It is a warning. It has been corrected. It was released in PMS 1.7.0 today.

what does it means that the hard drive is failing? Is it damage? Should i replace it ?
Or it is a software problem that can be solved without removing all Ubuntu ?

Yes, you need to replace it.

Save all the data you need to save and then reinstall on a new drive. Restore your personal data (to your home directory) and your media (if needed) afterwards

Thanks but... this looks strange because with the command "sudo smartctl -a /dev/sdX" i got a PASS test result on that disk.
I used Plex for long time using Ubuntu 14.04 without any problem and when i upgrade to 16.04 PMS stop working, with same error. I wonder if my problem is related with the Ubuntu version and not with the disk itself.
To change disk it means to me to erase Ubuntu and reinstall all programs and settings and drivers on another hard disk...
If i do so, are you sule PMS will work ? Is it convenient to try it with a Live CD od Ubuntu, before changing the disk?

That could indeed be true. You might be be seeing the disk errors as a result of the Ubuntu installation.

I do not like upgrading different OS versions onto themselves. They carry too much 'baggage'. In Ubuntu's case, they carry FAR too much. From 14-15-16, it was a linux disaster.

While I cannot guarantee PMS will run for you, on your system after installation without actually seeing it, the problems you're having are NOT common. There is something unique to your configuration / installation.

When I setup Linux, I use all 4 partitions of a MSDOS partition table (unless GPT is required)

  1. boot
  2. swap
  3. root
  4. home

This layout allows me to do whatever is needed. Also, I can move from distro version to version. My PMS installation is in /home/plex .

Do you think i can check Ubuntu both 14.04 and 16.04 usind a Live CD and see if PMS works there? If it is a problem related with the 16.04 version i will install the 14.04 (in a new disk !)

Would you please recomend me againg the correct package and installation procedure to make a clear and correct installation, and not to follow wrong tutorials as i found in internet?

thanks very much

PMS won't run from a Live environment without grafting into the host /sys, /proc, and /dev directories. (a classic chroot mapping)

Ubuntu 14.04 uses init as it's main start mechanism. Ubuntu 16.04 uses systemd. The two systems diverge from there.

If you are going to make any selection, go with Ubuntu 16.04. I strongly suggest leaving 14.04 back in 2014 where it belongs.

The process to install plex are extremely simple on a fresh Ubuntu 16.04 installation. If you have a lot of metadata (your Library), I would make sure you have enough space in your root partition (if that's easier for you) or we can move it later.

  1. Download the package for your system from
  2. in a terminal window, sudo dpkg -i plex_package_name.deb <-- whatever specific file you actually download
  3. sudo systemctl enable plexmediaserver
  4. sudo systemctl start plexmediaserver
  5. Open and go through the setup again.

i formatted the disks and reinstalled PMS on a different disk. After installation PMS starts correctly !!

I still have the problem to let PMS see all my disks ... can you pass me the right procedure to give PMS permission to see the drivers? I don't wanna make any error this time

It Works !!!!

thank you very much
