# Plex freezes when transcoding one show

Server Version#: 1.24.5.5173-8dcc73a59  
Player Version#: 4.69.0

I am running PMS on a synology DS920+ with 4 8TB WD Red drives and no upgraded components. Hardwired with gigabit eithernet.

Everytime I try to play one specific show (Darling in the Franxx) I can typically play for 3-4 min until the intro plays then the video and audio both freeze and I get the yellow loading wheel until I close out of the app.

The show is mp4, H.264, AAC, 1080p all that jazz and is subtitled in english.

The system I use is to download from streamfab (the cruncyroll module for this show) then to compress it in dvdfab to a smaller file size and upload to the NAS. Important because I think this issue may be a result of something with streamfab and not PMS because I have used this same method with every other piece of media on my NAS and have only had this issue with this one show. I have tried to downsize the resolution, the codec, the container, and the bitrate when converting the show and nothing changes the freezing issue.

However I want to double check that it isnt a transcoding issue on my PMS because I can play the video files no issue directly from my computer, but when trying to watch through plex it always freezes.

Burning subtitles will kill almost every Synology NAS. Bitrates and codecs have little impact by comparison if it can otherwise process the file in hardware

Can you show me the info PMS knows about the file?

(Hover over the poster → click the ellipsis → Get Info

I’m interested in the video part - Specifically what subtitle info there is.

I suspect you’re going to find they are PGS, VOBSUB or DVDRIP format which are images and are the hardest to deal with on a Synology system

I have attached the requested info in a screengrab, hopefully that shows all the needed information.

However the strange thing is it’s just this one show; I have no issue with subtitles on any other show or movie causing it to freeze.

The subtitle is text based SRT. – easy

At this point, the log files will tell us why it’s transcoding and causing you to peg the CPU.

Please verify DEBUG logging is on, VERBOSE is off  
Play again for 20 seconds  
Stop  
Wait 20 seconds  
Download the logs ZIP file (under Server - Troubleshooting)
