Plex iOS Download feature is unusable as it does not ever complete a download

@Fullmakt We have not removed Downloads or brought back Sync. Are you using Plex for iOS or Plex for Mac on your laptop?

Hi, if i download in original quality all works fine (IOS 15 and IpadOS15) but if I try to convert to low quality and low space  the download failed (if the file is greater than 2GB). My workaround is optimize movie and download the previously optimized version… (adding it in other library because the download button cannot recognized the two versions…)

very sad, pay for plexpass, for application… and a basic and payed feature doesn’t work as expected…

I have responded to your other thread / post about this. Fix hopefully coming out in Plex Media Server 1.28.1 - meanwhile increase the time on your server network setting for killing paused playback

Hi, I just switched to iOS after using Android for the last ten years. Was not having any issues with the Downloads feature on Android. However, on my iPhone 14 Pro, Downloads is extremely buggy to the point of being not usable.

  1. Downloads don’t seem to progress if the phone is asleep or the app isn’t focused.
  2. Even if I force the app open and keep it open, it takes hours to transcode and then download to the phone over home wifi

I’ve done some research and see there is something called a ā€œDNS rebindingā€ issue that was flagged about a year ago. I have an Eero mesh network at home and no setting to configure here. I did move my DNS on the phone to Google DNS, which matches my router.

I’m bummed because I’m going on a trip tomorrow and this is one of the few times I’m dependent on Downloads because I’m flying. Can barely get anything onto my phone.

Looking for tips on what could be up with my situation. My old Android phone works flawlessly in the same situation. I had always kinda assumed the iOS app was more polished given the history of Plex.

Is this a known limitation of using iOS with Plex?

I can have a look at logs to see if there are any specific factors affecting the speed of the download - logs from both sides - the Plex Media Server Logs and the Plex for iOS Logs. Make sure debug logging is enabled on the server beforehand and to start up with fresh logs best to start the download after a restart of the Plex Media Server with the debug server logging already enabled beforehand

When you notice the issue with the download on wifi taking a very long time - capture screenshots of the the Plex for iOS Downloads screen and also the app settings / downloads screen and then get the Plex for iOS logs zip emailed to yourself and download the server logs and attach both zips here with the screenshots and details of what was being downloaded and what time it was started and how big was the media file

This is mentioned on our FAQ support article here

Will the app continue to download media if the device goes to sleep or the screen saver activates?

No. File transfers cannot work if the app is moved to the background such as when the screen turns off or the device goes to sleep. The app must be running in the foreground. If the app is on the ā€œItemsā€ tab of the ā€œDownloadsā€ library, the app will actively keep the device awake and continue to download media to your device.

Hi, thanks for the response. I’m heading out on a trip and will be back next week and will attempt to reproduce and provide the requested logs. Thanks.

Regarding the FAQ, I did read that but was honestly quite surprised. First, that FAQ implies it covers both Android and iOS, and Android functionality does not do that. I have never left my phone open, with the display on, and Android’s download feature works as a user would expect, it leverages the device’s background API’s to conduct and manage downloads automatically and in the background as needed.

Second, iOS as a platform provides this capability also, so I’d just like to ask: is this on the Plex iOS’s roadmap to enhance at some point? It’s too big of a pain point for me to micromanage downloads and leave my phone open and accessible on a charger with the screen on and Plex focused for hours at a time.

For reference, my PMS is on Debian, using GPU-accelerated transcoding from an Nvidia card, and everything else is working fine. I pulled up my old Android phone (Samsung S21) and used download and it works exactly like a user would expect. Completely automated, behind the scenes.

Anyway, thanks again, I’ll respond back here probably towards the end of next week to at least troubleshoot and confirm whether and why my files are taking a long time to transfer over Wifi to my phone. Other UX issues notwithstanding.

I am raising this with the development team and we will look into why the iOS background api is not working

Hello all,

Just chiming in to advocate for my favorite Feature Request (iOS allows background downloads, why doesn’t Plex enable it) and maybe save you some headaches.

For some of you, the problem you are experiencing may be the same as me. I spent days, maybe weeks, looking for the root cause of why my downloads kept failing on my family’s iPads and iPhones (any Apple device). Symptom: If you close your device or put PLEX in the background, the download will stop a short time later. Cause: It is because background downloading is not implemented.

Please upvote this Feature Request and tell your friends to also. It is not getting enough eyes/votes/attention that it deserves

Cheers.

And thank you to @sa2000 for trying to help
