Plex is not automatically scanning and updating my music when I add new albums

Server Version#: 1.19.4.2902

So I use lidarr to manage my music, but whenever I download and import music plex won’t automatically update my library. I have to perform a manual library scan before plex will see new albums/artists that have been added.

I’ve verified that Include music libraries in automatic updates is enabled in my library settings, but this seems to make no difference. Movies and tv shows are imported flawlessly without delay, but music never seems to be automatically imported. Apparently large libraries can cause problems, but I have a rather modest music library with only 164 different artists and probably an average of a couple of albums from each artist.

I’m also seeing this in the logs shortly after the media is added:

The line that sticks out is:

Jul 17, 2020 09:26:54.664 [0x7feb71ffb700] WARN - Skipping refresh of music library because we're signed out or offline.

My google-fu isn’t coming up with any results to help with troubleshooting. But my server is indeed connected to the internet and I regularly stream music (and sometimes movies/shows) remotely.

This has been a re-occuring issue for a couple of months and through several versions of PMS. I run my plex and lidarr on docker containers running on Ubuntu 18 with plex pass.

Has anyone else had this problem?

  1. Is the media on local drive(s) or a network mount ?
  2. Do you have more than 8192 directories (total for all media) being monitored?

Linux default allows 8192. It is easily increased at the cost of kernel memory (small but measurable).

Media mounted on a network share will never be automatically detected (inotify service does not run across network devices)

Hello Chuck,

  1. Local drive. The same single drive that my shows and movies are on.
  2. How can I check this?

@ChuckPa

These are my three library folders. Running a find for directories shows that cumulatively, I should be well under the 8192 default

REDACTED@REDACTED:~$ cat /proc/sys/fs/inotify/max_user_watches
8192
REDACTED@REDACTED:~$ find /mnt/hdd/media/shows/ -maxdepth 5 -type d -print | wc -l
391
REDACTED@REDACTED:~$ find /mnt/hdd/media/music/ -maxdepth 5 -type d -print | wc -l
436
REDACTED@REDACTED:~$ find /mnt/hdd/media/movies/ -maxdepth 5 -type d -print | wc -l
363
REDACTED@REDACTED:~$

The inotify service descends to the bottom.
Do you have the same total without the -maxdepth parameter?

Hello @ChuckPa ,

Yes, the exact same numbers when running find /mnt/hdd/media/{MEDIATYPE}/ -type d -print | wc -l. I can still add new movies, new tv shows (not just new episodes, but new shows), and new seasons which get scanned and added automatically. So to me, it doesn’t seem to be a watch/inode limitation but I definitely can’t say for absolute certainty.

Would I get WARN - Skipping refresh of music library because we're signed out or offline. in my logs if it was a watch limitation?

I appreciate the help troubleshooting this issue.

May I have a full set of DEBUG (ZIP) logs?
I’ll look through the server and scanner logs together and see what’s in therer.

Hello @ChuckPa,

I’ve tried sending you a private message with the requested logs, but I am told you are not accepting private messages.

PMS version 1.19.4.2902 was the culprit.

Updating fixed my problem.
