Plex Just Ruined Their Roku App

I agree with the OP; the new Roku UI is awful.

I’ve been using plex for over a decade and personally know over a dozen plex users with 4 or more libraries (I have eight.) Its not a unique case, so stop making up your own statistics and presenting them as facts.

I just did the disable all Online Sources on the web app, had to change from disabled for known users to disabled for all, then I went into the Roku app and to the Libraries tab, and the 3-dot sub-menu that appears at the end of your library list (Secondary tab bar - such a bad UI design). In there I hearted/liked my libraries, and after doing that I returned to the Home Screen to have a semblance of the last versions Home Screen. I have my Continue Watching feed, as well as my New In Library feeds, and all TV, other source stuff is gone.

So for anyone looking to try and use this new App while Plex deals with the flood of negative comments I hope this workaround at least gives you some functionality back.

Thank you! I am embarrassed to say, but after 10 years of using Plex I learned something new today. Didn’t realize their was a difference between pinning and adding libraries as a favorite. Once I did what you suggested, my libraries were back on the home screen! Still not a big fan of the new UI, but I can get over that real quickly now that may home screen is back the way I know and like it.

Whoever came up with this design obviously does not use the product. It is horrible, they should either go back to the old format or let the user pick if they want this monstrosity. Maybe if people start cancelling their subscriptions, plex will get the notice that this was a bad design.

Please change the user interface for the Roku app back!! It is totally unusable for us, and has me looking for some alternative to view my streaming libraries!

Plex….

Did you guys even use this app yourselves?

I now have so much stuff on my screen I don’t want, can’t hide it. App is slow. And I now have 20 more clicks than I ever used to.

It’s clear the aggressive push for on-demand is taking over at plex. Plex pass wasn’t enough to live off of.

For the love of God roll it back. I know some people must have worked hard on this and you don’t want to waste the time and resources that went into it. But you should. Mothball the whole new UI. There was literally nothing wrong with the old one.

Who was asking for this?

Quit ■■■■■■■ with the ui and work on other core stuff. People give you their money because they like your product. Stop changing it.

It didn’t need to pass QC. Marketing and Finance run most companies and I’m sure Plex is no different. More likely than not, some marketing shill, bent on getting himself a fat year-end bonus, championed this cluster-f abomination by telling the powers-that-be that letting people EASILY get to the content they WANT was wasting opportunities to sell them CRAP they DO NOT want. “If we just make them click enough, they will RENT it through us instead”..

I am soo happy you posted this today. Just had to spend 2 hours reworking my PLEX setup and gettting all my Rokus setup correctly. Even worse, one of my “hidden” libraries was in plain view on the list, where it was never meant to be seen. I had to “heart” a bunch of libraries to hide it again. Absolutely unacceptable behavior by the devs. They clearly do not understand why we all have PLEX servers in the first place. Control and visibility is key to how we use these solutions. For the love of media enthusiasts everywhere please continue to speak up and let PLEX know how much they failed here. Thank you.

I am serioustly considering reviving my XBMC and KODI setups. My wife liked that system better anyways, so perhaps the extra work is worth it a this point in the PLEX lifecycle. Everyting good eventual is taken and twisted by evil doers and those evil doers certainly have PLEX by the source code right now.

Plex ruined the whole experience!

Why don’t they test the user interface out first with a focus group of Plex users. I feel blindsided. Nothing like trying to watch your content and having to relearn how to use everything.

Absolutely agree the new UI is really bad. Difficult to navigate. Feels like a prototype before last release. First time Ive thought of leavinf Plex.

I totally get it - I just spent most of my weekend moving friends and family away from Plex to an alternative (Emby).

For those that recently bought another Roku (I bought a Streaming Stick for travel) be sure to comment to Roku’s survey if you get one and let hem know how much - if any - Plex’s changes might impact your willingness to buy another Roku.

100%. Hard to believe how bad this is. Hopefully Plex will fix it.

I hate that the “live TV” is split between my antenna and the Plex live channels. I like to see all on one screen! I liked that the folders were on the left side of the screen, as it was easier to use. I do not want to use the back arrow to go to previous screens. The new interface is more work.

Movie Edition Tags have been removed from Collections in the new Roku update. I have several movies with different editions that I have put in ‘mini’ collections (eg the various different cuts of Apocalypse Now are in a collection, and the different cuts of Alien are in another collection). When accessing the collections, Plex on Roku now just displays only the movie title and not the edition. this make is very difficult to distinguish which file / edition to play. PLEX, Please please please make an update to correct this.

If it’s any consolation I mentioned exactly this issue the other day and a Plex employee responded very promptly and informed me that the issue had been passed on to the dev team as it is not the inetended behaviour.

I would have to agree 100%. I have 11 library’s and the format they chose is horrible!

They also removed Recent Playlists from the Home page with no option to add it back. I use playlists all of the time and now I have to go hunt them down every time I want to play one.
