It seems like the latest update Plex continues to scan my playlists and libraries. When it does that it seems to lock up the settings page and it doesn’t let me add more files to be shared. In order for me to add new files I need to stop the service and restart it in DSM. Is there a work around or is this a documented issue with the latest update?
There has been a change to try and match any unmatched media after scans - bit it should not be locking out settings
Suggest you make sure server debug logging is enabled
Restart the server to get fresh logs
When the problem arises, note down the time, take a screenshot and summarize the issue and attach the zipped logs

I’ve got exact the same issue since the last update. It’s was running fine for over a year on my DS216+II.

Is there a work around or is this a documented issue with the latest update?Low powered NAS will not respond quickly while Plex is busy adding files or performing maintenance, this is because the CPU is being fully utilised by Plex for the tasks it is already performing and there is no processor time left to service your requests in a timely manner.
You need to wait until Plex has completed it’s tasks, then continue to make whatever changes you wish to make or to add files etc. A little patience is required when using under powered NAS devices, especially if they are powered by an ARM processor.
If you want to be able to access settings while Plex is performing it’s tasks, then you have two choices. Buy a more powerful NAS (Big $$$) or use a PC/Mac/Linux machine that has a suitably powerful processor that can handle multiple tasks at the same time.
I own a 1815+ is that under powered?
The 1815+ isn’t underpowered. It’s no jet fighter but it’s no hanglider either
I have one and it’s a 64 bit Intel quad core. It’s OK for audio conversion… NOTHING for video conversion. Overall a good, non-video transcoding server.
Well, this all is really interesting but knowing about all these specs and numbers does not help the problem at all.
The question is, whether the latest version of the Plex Media Server might be buggy and whether this is a known issue.
My DS216+II has been set up over a year ago and ran without any problems until I updated to version 1.12.1. Since then it shows the symptoms that vthee described in his originial post.
I didn’t change anything concerning the naming conventions. They worked fine for more than a year and as an experienced sysadmin I tend to not change running systems. I also do not intend to install additional software in order to solve the problem as long as I suspect the reason to be a bug in the server software.
Please let’s concentrate on the issue and solving the problem. One very helpful approach could the the hint of sa2000 who wrote: “There has been a change to try and match any unmatched media after scans - but it should not be locking out settings.”
Let me try to clarify:
- There is a known problem with PMS 1.12.x. Engineering is trying to resolve it.
- The bug is causing a lot of undue load on the NAS.
- Until they fix it, your DS216+II is going to struggle and unfortunately there’s nothing we can do about it.
If you have a copy of PMS 1.11.x laying around, you can downgrade to it.
Maybe along the same lines, maybe not. Mine also continues to scan. Through my excellent detective skills I believe the problem to be whenever my iMac is connected/mapped to the Synology shared drive. When I click on disconnect within finder, the plex server stops the continuous scanning. I actually bought the mac version of Filebot yesterday and renamed every single movie file and got rid of every non-movie or non-subtitle file just in case something else was causing the issue. Is this a known issue or is this expected behavior?

Thanks a lot for this clarification. I downgraded PMS for now.

After the downgrade did it fix the issue? Where can I get the last version of PMS?
Yes, it is running fine again. Fortunately i kept the last version on my hard drive.

What version are you running? Is this the latest and greatest version? Version 1.12.1.4885
Now I’m running version 1.11.3.4803. The version you mentioned is the buggy one.
@trumpy81 said:
Why not try version 1.12.2.4929, it is the latest version available for Plex Pass members. That is the version I am using and like I said, I don’t see any issues with scanning/matching that have not existed for a long time, namely slow Music library matching and metadata fetching etc., but that has been an issue for a long time now.You no longer get lots of error messages in the logs when scanning Music libraries, that has been corrected and IMHO, Music scanning/matching is a little bit faster than it used to be, but not by much, it will still try to match tracks that have not been matched previously, hence my recommendation to make sure your file naming is correct etc.
I’m running that version and it is still buggy… still randomly scans and locks up the server settings under the gui. Is there a fix? Every version up until the last 2 have been rock solid but the last 2 have been real bad. Need assistance to troubleshoot this further.
There is currently an issue where if you have unmatched music then Plex Media Server will attempt to refresh metadata and match these everytime you add media to your music library and the new directory is scanned. It happens at the end where it looks for any unmatched within the library
This will be changed in release 1.13.0 which is expected to be released to beta shortly - within next few days hopefully

Is it possible to get that version so I can test it out on my NAS?
Are there any log files which I may look at? I looked above and don’t see any.
I also request clarification of what ’ locked settings’ means.
The web client can timeout and make PMS unresponsive on all pages (settings or otherwise) independent of scanning media.
I would like to be more definitive here and find the root cause before going to the effort of installing PMS 1.13.0 when it becomes available.

It has already been tested and confirmed as fixed. So please wait for 1.13.0
I reiterate my request for logs before proceeding.

Agree - the logs were requested back at the beginning of the month. It may not be the same issue
