Plex media won't play on Android App but will play in Browser on a different device

Server Version#: 1.21.1.3876
Player Version#: 8.18.1.25719 (1d75c2cc)

The plex server is hosted on my QNAP NAS. I can play the same media on a desktop with chrome at App.Plex.tv, so it doesn’t appear to be a networking issue.

So far I’m unable to play any media from the Plex server on my Android phone nor on the Playstation 5 Plex app. I tried logging out and back in to the Plex app on the PS5 but that didn’t seem to help.

“An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again.”

I’m attaching the logs. I made a point to attempt to play something right before exporting the logs so you’ll see my attempt to play Akira at the end of the Plex Media Server.log.

Removed logs. Uploaded redacted snipped of play test on Android device.

I have the same problem. On my android devices plex cant play media. On browser, no problem! And the app is up to date.

In my case plex just shows an alert saying, there are a reproduction problem.

Thanks for the reply. It’s a really frustrating issue and I’m hopeful that a Plex power user will be able to take a look at the logs. I’m attaching some additional images of trying to play media from my Plex server on various devices (all on the network).

same issue here.
anyone have any idea how to fix that?

my report: Only android App can not connect to the server remotely

I am having the same issue. It seems to have started about a week ago or so for me. I am running plex server on a Synology NAS and I can get movies and music through the web or locally but when trying to stream through the android app on my phone or samsung tablet I get an message that an error occured. Any help would be appreciated.

I removed the logs from my initial post and can supply them as needed. Attached is an additional log snipped of an attempted play of a movie on my Android device.
Plex log snippet.txt (33.1 KB)

I have the same problem.
My server is hosted on Westren Digital My Cloud Home device.
Everything was working well, but stopped about a week ago.
Browser works fine.
Android not (phone or tv box). I’m connected to the same network.
Ideas?.

@Sharpiemarker What is the local IP of of your NAS? Can you go to the servers network settings and change the preferred network setting to whatever it should be then restart your NAS and try again

Add another to this list. I was completely happy with my Plex, and Plex/Sonos combo. Came home last week and everything is broken. I can now play media on my laptop, but not android devices, and my remote access will not remain available for more than 3 seconds. I hope there is an answer.

Can you elaborate on “whatever it should be” for those of us beginners?

meaning make sure it is on the one that is the same subnet as the clients.

if the server has multiple local IPs because it has multiple active NICs the server will only choose one. say 192.168.3.x then but the client is on 192.168.5.x those are two separate networks. This can cause things to get screwy

So, if everything on my server is 192.168.50.xxx everything’s Jake?

@BigWheel - The NAS running Plex doesn’t have a static local IP yet. It changed about a month ago but everything continued working as normal until a week ago. I can set it back to the address it was previously.

You think the IP address is the issue?

I assume “Jake” means “fine/swell” but no i am not saying that. there could be other issues. but like most things it is a process of elimination. and i prefer to elliminate simple things first before I start asking y’all to deep dive into things that could have no relavance

@Sharpiemarker I don’t know that to be the issue but it is a possibility. another way to check is this. Does the “private” IP (which just means local) listed in the remote access settings show as being the same subnet as the client device. I am not asking you to actually change what it is just to change the drop down to use the NIC that has the current IP that is on same network as client if there are multiple with different IPs

Like if you are using a docker that as a major effect on things and will add NICs

@BigWheel

The IP Address from the Remote Access settings and all the devices in question are on the same subnet (the NAS/PMS, the android phone, and the PS5.)

I just noticed your NAS is pretty far behind on updates. Any reason you have not updated and are still on v1.21.1.3876 ?

Looking more at logs it appears to be a certificate issue

@BigWheel - I think I have to manually update the Plex software on the QNAP. I’ve got the latest version from their app store, but it’s pretty far behind GA.

Yeah I always manually update my QNAP. You can get current on our downloads page an do the manual install in the App Center.

Please excuse my ignorance, as I’m new to Plex. I’m having the same issue as others here are reporting.
I installed Plex on my WD MyCloud Home through the apps section on the NAS, not from the downloads on Plex website. How do I know if my server is up to date, and if not how do I update it?

@shauledelman - I was able to look up some instructions for manually updating Plex on my QNAP. I’m guessing the process is going to be similar. I’m also pretty confident that it fixed my problem. Still need to check one more device.
