Plex is one of the minimalist websites that lure visitors with simple graphics and broad statements about their products. It’s only have you plunge in or dig several layers deep do you really start to see how truly limited the offerings are.
Live TV/DVR:
Every DVR I have ever owned in the past 15+ years allowed me to:
- Record by time/channel
- View programming at least a week in advance (usually more)
- Watch a show while it’s being recorded
- Record a show from the DVRs TV interface
Plex DVR does NONE of these.
- No way to record by time/channel
- Programming guide goes ahead maybe 1 hour
- Recorded shows do not show up in recordings until show has finished recording
- No option to record via the Roku app
- Also, apparently the Synology NAS device is not considered an NAS device as there is no DVR option on the latest available Plex server app
Amazon Echo "integration"
Sounds cool. I was so looking forward to saying “Alexa, play music from my Plex library.” Nope. Can’t be done.
Instead I have to open Plex on another device and then tell Alexa to control Plex on that device.
This is totally and utterly useless. If I have to open the app on the device manually to play my music, I might as well just hit “play” from the device and not shout it across the room.
Plex, please stop promising things that you cannot fully deliver. This only serves to frustrate and anger users. Be more upfront as to what you really CAN and CANNOT provide and stop wasting our time.
