A while ago it was said that in Plex 9 there would be the option to have TV shows stored as full DVD rips in the TS format instead of having each episode ripped separately. I was wondering how that is coming along.
Can you elaborate on how well it is working? I know with full DVD rips we will not have control over individual episodes, but that doesn’t really concern me. I am however wondering about how the info is being scraped? Is having TV shows organized in such a way compatible with TVdb? If keeping TV shows in this format is not compatible with TVdb can wee at our own data? Would the TV rips still be organized by seasons? Any screen shots that you can share?
I much prefer to keep the full DVD functionality of my rips so I always rip them in TS format. For movies this is fine since they work great in Plex. Unfortunately TV shows don’t work as well for me. I have to watch them from the videos section which is definitely not as cool since there is no data to go with the shows.
Any info would be appreciated. 🙂

I think I remember saying that Plex/Nine would be able to support those sorts of things (DVD/TV Shows). It definitely won’t be fully “baked” in the first public release. There are lots of edge cases and different formats and we’re shooting for supporting the most common ones first.
As for an update, we’re working on the fifth private alpha at the moment, and I’m hoping that we’ll take that plus bugfixes and make that the first public release. Thanks for your patience 🙂

Heheh, I like that analogy, so true too.
I purposely refrained from checking this thread for a couple of weeks after the estimated public alpha schedule message was left, I'm guessing with a hint of optimism its close now?
You know what its like, if your waiting for something and check every day, it seems to take twice as long :-)

Fantastic, I imagine this will be the last question I have before its released (there's optimism :-) , will the "/Library" directory structure allow for us to run Plex 0.90a along-side Plex 0.85 ?

No, since the two versions both store their data in the same Application Support folders, and some of the components stored there have been updated for 0.9 (and are not backwards-compatible with 0.8 versions). You can, however, move/rename the "Plex" and "Plex Media Server" folders when you want to switch between versions.

I am very impressed with the Media Manager - it really feels like a Mac application now, and not a division of XBMC. You guys are doing amazing work, and I cannot wait to get my hands on 9 and really dissect all the new features! It seems you guys are very innovative, and have thought up a lot of stuff… you have put in the work of a developer for Apple - I never would of thought this was a project just started for a side-project! You are making our lives easier with easy-to-use software, and I thank you for that 😃
And now for my question: This is sort of off-topic, but I am wondering if hard drives on my Windows machines will be easily accessible in Plex on my Mini? My mini is my HTPC, but the rest of the computers in the house are Windows, so clearly they will not be running Plex. Judging from the video, you need the Plex Media Server running for your shares to appear on the home screen…will that be available for Windows as well, or will there be another way to share content from a Windows to the Mac?

From my understanding (going off the Screencast, so probably not huge), it looks like this should be possible. Enable the relevant Windows folders to be shared via Bonjour, and add them as a source within Plex. (It seems that as long as you're connected to the drive you can drag and drop into the Media Manager?). Thinking about it, you should be able to do this in Plex 8!
It seems that the Plex Media Server's new purpose is to share libraries across multiple mac HTPCs.

Russ, thanks for the kind words, we greatly appreciate them :) As winstano correctly points out, the Media Manager can easily pull in content from a NAS or a Windows machine or a Commodore 64 as long as the drive is mounted on the machine where the Media Server is running (i.e. via AFP/SMB).

C64 support? Now that's a feature we all wanted. :P
And yes, seems too good to be true, Elan. Outstanding work!
By the way, are scanners and media types "open"? As you already know, I made the Game Launcher plug-in for Plex 8, and if I can somehow add the games to the Media Manager (instead of scraping at every plug-in launch) with editable metadata, this would truly rock.

The scanners and metadata agents are totally open, the former being simple Python code and the latter being a sophisticated evolution of the Plex Plug-ins you know and love.
The Media Server does need some "training" on new type hierarchies, so it's not \*completely\* dynamic/extensible, this would be pretty hard (or at least not a 1.0 thing). But it's the next best thing. Right now we have a TV Show hierarchy, Movies, and a Music hierarchy. Games and Comics would be obvious possible next type hierarchies to consider.
