ROKU Ultra 4660x Software version 9.4.0 build 4174-46
Recently PLEX has been having odd audio issues. On many shows and movies, it glitches, stutters and often just cuts out for 1/2 a second. I have rebooted the PLEX server several times. I have restarted the ROKU box several times. I have confirmed that the audio glitches are not in the original media file. Files play fine on other Roku devices (TCL TV’s with Roku built in).
The problem seems to have started about 10 days ago when my Roku updated to the new 9.4.0 firmware.
Roku is connected to 7.1 receiver which plays sound and outputs HDMI (video only) to the TV.
Issue is more noticeable in stereo than in 5.1 - not sure if that is helpful.
I have been running this exact setup for 3+ years and this issue just started last week. I have made no other changes to the config/setup.
Some shows are now unwatchable, while other are just annoying.
Please investigate.
I’m having the same issue. My Roku just updated to 9.4.0 (Streaming Stick +) and I noticed frequent issue with the audio. Specifically when direct playing AC3.
Audio goes slightly out of sync, stutters, glitches and cuts out for 1-2 second, exactly same behaviour. I’m suprised this hasn’t gotten enough attention already.
I’m having the same issue too, and like Manujito said, it’s with AC3 direct playing. If I force it to transcode, the audio issue disappears.
EDIT: I have a TCL Roku TV R617 running Roku 9.4.0 build 4190-30.
I can confirm I’m seeing the same issue on my Roku Streaming +, which is running 9.4.0 (build 4190-50).
However, I am not seeing the issue on my TCL Roku TV, which is also running 9.4.0 (build 4190-48 though).
Agreed. I have set my PLEX app to force transcoding and now it works. Unfortunately, I am now having the issue detailed in other threads that transcoded movies and TV shows sometimes get ended early when they are paused or started part-way-through. But that’s easier for me to deal with than the audio issues.
Well at least I know it’s not an issue with my setup. It’s annoying to say the least.
I wonder if there’s a way to rollback the Roku update.
I am in fact seeing these issues on my TCL Roku TV. Wonder if either Plex or Roku is working on a fix - though I also wonder how many users this is affecting overall.
Curious, I wonder if you have that slightly newer Roku firmware build on yours (i.e., 4190-50 instead of 4190-48). What does your Settings > System > About screen show?
It actually shows build 4190-30 on mine.
Edit: also want to mention my TCL is model number 55R615
I posted this in a similar thread but wanted to hit both up in case it helps…
Additional information for audio delay issues - for my setup it seems to be EAC3 or AC3 in MKV containers. AAC seems fine and AC3 in MP4 container is fine (at least with the files I tested).
All files played audio and video as direct stream\direct play.
Roku TV: TCL 49S405 (7104X) OS 9.4 - 4190-30
Plex for Roku: 6.6.16.6715-c4643204c-Plex
Attaching 3 Media Info files. Two with different delays and one without.
CaptainAmerica (no delay).txt (5.4 KB)
Gentlemen (very slight delay).txt (3.1 KB)
JohnOliver (very noticeable delay).txt (4.4 KB)
Captain America had zero delay.
The Gentlemen had about a 100-200ms delay - hardly noticeable
John Oliver had about a 500ms delay - very noticeable (like stereotypical dubbed martial arts).
Hopefully this helps track this hiccup down a bit.
Edit: MKV with EAC3 and no delay MediaInfo: MandalorianS2E4 (no Delay MKV).txt (6.3 KB)
Edit: Audio setting on HDMI set to AUTO
I have the exact same issue with my Roku Ultra.
Have changed nothing in my video/audio setup, only thing that has changed is this 9.4 OS update.
It direct plays only if I select “force” and even then it says “incompatible audio stream” even for playing simple ac3 2.0.
Plus all the Roku “volume modes” like night and leveling are grayed out and disabled. Is this happening for you too?
This is happening on the Roku Streaming Stick+. It’s a solid 1-2 seconds out of sync. Disabling Direct Play doesn’t even fix the issue anymore.
I own a TCL 50S425 roku TV and am experiencing this same issue with out of sync audio during direct play. Fixes with forced transcoding. Started with the 9.4 firmware update (build 4190-30). Has anyone contacted Roku? Seems pretty prevalent if its happening across multiple devices.
Having audio dropouts as well with plex streamed movies on my Roku Ultra. One movie it happened every 15 minutes or so. Another movie it was happening every 20 seconds and unwatchable.
I was going nuts thinking it was the receiver I bought a couple weeks ago, but after testing Netflix and other apps with same Roku there were not any audio issues. Glad I saw this thread, hopefully a fix is out soon!
Here’s a test file that has very distinct audio delay for me: https://www.dropbox.com/s/v94ojytny25sohy/testfile1.mkv?dl=0
MediaInfo for file: TestFile1.txt (3.7 KB)
I also tested playback of the file on my TCL Roku TV (see my earlier post for specs) from the Roku Media Player app via Plex DLNA and it has the same delay so will be reporting this to Roku directly as well.
Also some Roku Community posts on the issue:

I tested a bit and it seems that I have this delay and stuttering (the audio skips for a second or sometimes less) issue mostly while watching contents with EAC3 (Dolby Digital Plus) audio. Roku Streaming Stick+ & Soundbar with DD (AC3), DDP (EAC3), DTS capability connected via ARC to Samsung TV.
I put up an additional test file and some info at the other thread, but since I haven’t noticed a comment from a Plex employee I’m cross posting a bit until I see which thread becomes the “official” thread.
I recommend contacting Roku Support and besides referring the Plex channel, also mention Roku Media Player channel as having the issue (which it does). Roku Support took all my reference info and said they’d look into it so the more people reporting the more likely it’ll get solved - hopefully.
I just wanted to add that I am also experiencing the same audio drop out issue when playing content with AC3 audio over my Roku Streaming Stick+. Every 15 minutes or so, the audio will drop for a second or two. I am not seeing an audio delay or sync issue, though, just occasional dropouts.
Same issues as ack2sf.
On Roku Ultra, Direct playing any 5.1 file (DTS and AC-3) will stop for a split second. This seemed to happen after a Plex update as I didn’t have an issue before on Roku 9.4. Heard this happened on Windows earlier, now on Roku. Everything seems to work on my smart tv though
Does anyone know if a fix is being looked at either from Plex or Roku side? I have this issue both on my Ultra box and streaming stick. 4K rips are especially bad with the audio drops now, unwatchable. Been a long term Roku user, but now considering trying out the latest Nvidia Shield.
Any other streaming services on the Roku are flawless (Netflix, prime, HBO, etc.). Issue is only Plex content.
