Plex only available via Plex Relay & Remote Access always changing from green to red after a few sec

Server Version#: 1.31.2.6810
Player Version#: 1.66.1.3632-4d9c7716

I have my Plex Server running in a Win10 Pro (64bit) VM with Unraid as my Hypervisor. The VM is set to Bridge Mode and my VM has a dedicated IP Adress. I set the Remote Port manually and forwardet it correctly in my Router and also enabled UPnP so the Server can open Ports by itself.

The Problem is, when I check the Remote Acess - most of the time it says “Not available outside your network”. When I click on “retry” it takes a few seconds and shows up as “Fully accessible outside your network”. After a few seconds or minutes it changes back to not available.
When I try to watch a movie on my phone (with Guest-Wifi or Mobile Cellular to test it) it is working but ONLY with Plex Relay. Every other User has the same Problem with my Server.

In my LAN I have no Problem at all.

Does someone has a Hint for me? Maybe Windows Firewall blocking something or some VM-related settings I have to change in Unraid?

That’s just due to how the server’s remote access status check works. While testing the connection, the status indicator defaults to “green”, even if the test hasn’t finished.
TL;DR this simply means your remote access setup isn’t working to begin with.

With a VPN in the game, there’s all kinds of things that can go wrong. Those issues aren’t usually covered by the default troubleshooting.

Thanks for the reply.

Well that’s not a great way a check should run… I don’t know why the Plex Team isn’t fixing this weird behavior. This is annoying me for years now but the remote access has always worked for me until now with my new VM.

I haven’t mentioned a VPN. There isn’t one.

My bad… I must have misread VM as VPN (or I finally need glasses).

Did you already have a look at the related troubleshooting support article?

There’s also a guide with some more details on how to troubleshoot remote access issues…

No Problem

Yes I’ve already read this article a couple of times. I’m sure that I’ve done everything correctly.

I’ll take a deeper look at the Guide tomorrow. Thanks for the help for now

Thanks for the hint. I’ve read a couple of Reply’s on this topic but I think this is another problem.

I can access my server remotely but ONLY with Plex Relay. It did not once work with a direct connection to my Plex VM.
On top of this problem is the strange behavior of the remote access „apply/retry“ button. Where its green for a few seconds and then changes its mind to red → not accessible - but it is over Plex Relax like mentioned above.
I want a direct connection to my server without the relay…

I think I found the solution…
The public IP shown in my Router Interface and the public IP shown in Plex and on sites like https://www.wieistmeineip.de/ is different. I should have noticed this earlier but here we are…dumb

After a short google search it seems like my provider activated “Carrier-grade NAT”, which will make Portforwarding useless… So I´ve now mailed my ISP in hope they will change it. I mean they have to change it because I´m paying extra money for an dedicated public IP for years now.

I´ll post an update whether this solved it or not.

Short Update:
My ISP gave me a dedicated public IP and everything works perfectly fine.

Thanks everyone for the help :+1:t2:
