Plex Programmers - How to improve subtitles with Video_TS VTS files

Have a suggestion for the Plex programmers on how it might be possible to improve the playback of subtitles with VTS files in Video_TS folders.

I’m running PlexMediaServer-1.21.0.3711-b509cc236-x86.exe on a Win10 Home PC.

My version of the PlexMediaServer can play VTS files in a Video_TS folder. Thanks for having this feature!

The following discussion is playing the VTS file on my PC and on our LG 65UM7300AUE UHD TV set using Plex from the LG Store. I assume once PlexMediaServer works on the PC, it will work on our TV.

“Usually” before playing a VTS file using Plex, I can select a subtitle track as “Unknown (VOBSUB)”. But on some VTS files, the subtitle is set to “Off” without any “Unknown (VOBSUB)” displayed. On these VTS files, there is no way to display subtitles. This of course makes all of the VTS files useless since there is no point in watching a foreign video if one VTS file cannot display subtitles.

However, there may be an easy fix for this. Let’s say that the VTS file that cannot display subtitles is VTS_01_04. If I play that same VTS file using VLC, it will not show subtitle tracks at the beginning of playback. VLC will not show subtitle tracks until someone starts talking. After someone starts talking, if I then “right click the video > Subtitle > Subtrack”, VLC will show “Track 1” and if there are two tracks it will show “Track 1” and “Track 2”. Clicking the proper track will display English subtitles.

I have one VTS file that will not show the “Track 1” in VLC even after someone starts talking. I have to play the video for about a minute and then “right click the video > Subtitle > Subtrack” and the “Track 1” show up. Once the subtitle track is clicked and the subtitle is enabled, I can go back to the beginning of the VTS file and subtitles will display properly.

So my suggestion for the PlexMediaServer programmers is to allow the user to play the video, then stop it and click the 3 dots then “More > Select Subtitle Track” and at that time try to re-enable subtitles. That would allow the user to enable subtitles in Plex VTS playback like VLC can.

Really, really hope that this can be done in Plex. Then it will allow me to watch the many Korean Dramas that I have on my hard drive on my PC to our LG 65UM7300AUE UHD TV set.

If you want me to send you the VTS_01_04 file that has the problem, let me know and I’ll send it to you. Also any other file in the Video_TS folder that has the subtitles in it (I don’t know which one).

Plex does not support files organized in video_ts folders. I’m not sure how you managed to get this to work, but it will by YMMV.
