Go to server/settings/transcoder There is a little checkbox “Use hardware acceleration when available”. Check it. It’s not checked by default.
Thanks I will find it
You have to show advanced settings to see it
That’s strange. I cannot find that setting in the transcoding menu. My CPU is constantly hovers around 75% when I watch anything. I just installed the latest version offered by plex (Version 1.10.1.4602)
Any ideas?

- You must download and install the 64 bit version
- If you just obtained your Plex Pass, make certain to sign the server out and back in Settings - Server - General so it updates to PlexPass as well.
Thanks loads - makes all the difference with CPU consumption around 26%!
Perfect!
I have downloaded and installed the 64 bit version, and I don’t see the option “Use hardware acceleration when available”. Do I need plex pass to use the option?

Yes, I think you MUST have a plex pass

Hardware transcoding requires an active Plex Pass subscription
Hi, im about to buy a new NAS,
Is this 918+ good for transcoding 2 streams or more outside the house?
Anyone know how many transcodes it can manage?
Thanks!
I run my pms on a 916+. Have anyone a comparison between the 916+ and the 918+ when it comes down to plex?
@ChuckPA
Nice to hear that you guys work on a prober subtitle support for the frontend devices. Is there any intention to get vc-1 to h264 vi hw transcode working, too?
On the list for HW decoding to-do list are both VC-1 and MPEG2VIDEO. I have not annoyed the transcoder team since the holidays to see where they are at with it. Maybe I should
Since I don’t know a status, don’t have an beta, or even an alpha to test, I can only tell you “hopefully soon-ish (?)” <clueless shrug>
Take a look around the Syno forum… Search for both, there have been several comparisons done by the community.
I noticed that the OP’s image of the 918+ transcoding 10bit material doesn’t look washed out like it does when I transcode 10bit material in software on my Mac based Plex Media Server. Is this because of the transcoding in hardware? I’m surprised to see 10bit working since early discussion seemed to suggest that just 8bit worked on these boxes.

Plex server Version 1.10.0.4523 perfectly transcodes 4k 10bit HDR files with about 15% cpu usageThank you Plex team
Would you mind posting the XML of the video screenshots in your OP ? You have a few curious readers.
I deleted that sample but I will post pictures and xml from other one.

Impressive! Looking to get this NAS now with 2*4 TB WD RED Drives to start. Really looking forward to getting started with it!
Thanks for sharing! Do you find that the 10bit material looks normal or is it washed out when it is transcoded? The screenshot looks great, but it’s hard to tell.
The “Use hardware acceleration when available” was not available to me when I had Plex configured for language “Netherlands”. Had to switch to English to make that option available. (did not test performance yet)

May I have a screen shot of that problem? I will submit it immediately

Switched to “Netherlands” again, however, the option is still there. Switching and setting it “on” may have enabled it? The option still in english however…
It’s also still available when I switch it back off
