I installed Plex Server on Ubuntu Server on a Mini PC NUC with the contents on a Synology NAS. I have a very large music library. Overall, it works very well, except for the automatic scanning for new content. When a new album is added to Plex Server, the scan doesn’t start (the options in the settings are selected), and if I start it manually, the scan always starts from zero and takes a long time to display the albums. I can’t resolve this. My question is this: If I put Plex Server on Windows 11, will the scans be recognized? And would Windows Server be better than Windows 11? Thanks.

It is not about Linux vs. Windows.
The main difficulty lies in the fact that in your current configuration media storage and Plex server are on different systems. This makes it more difficult to trigger a signal when a new file is added or modified. Keep also in mind that ideally the trigger should be pulled only after the file has been written completely.

The Synology NAS is Linux-based and by default uses SAMBA to offer CIFS-compatible file sharing to Windows machines.

Have you tried to use an NFS file share, instead of a CIFS-based one?

Thanks for the answer, yes the sharing of the plex server was done with NFS, I followed the following guide: [Come accedere ai file su Synology NAS all'interno della rete locale (NFS) - Synology Knowledge Center](https://kb.synology.com/it-it/DSM/tutorial/How_to_access_files_on_Synology_NAS_within_the_local_network_NFS#7MrLJcRf6d)

Isn’t there a Linux setting that controls how many directories it monitors. If you’ve exceeded that value, the auto updates don’t work.

That’s what Otto and MovieFan are referring to.
It might be a safer bet to rely on scheduled or manual scans, though. Those file system events aren’t necessarily reported from the NAS to your Linux machine via inotify. The Syno KB you had linked only explains how to mount the drives, not that this will allow inotify integration.

@Massimiliano54

Yes, Follow these instructions:

> [@Linux Tips](https://forums.plex.tv/t/linux-tips/276247/9):
>
> Increase the number of directories Linux can monitor (inotify) for PMS The default size of the Linux inotify table is 8192 directories (\*1). When PMS is configured to update automatically when media is added, with properly organized media, especially music, this table rapidly fills and exceeds the default allocation requiring you to increase it. The solution to this is straight forward. Increasing the table size is easy. The first step is to determine how many directories to allocat…

First step - Make certain you’re using NFS for Linux ↔ Synology networking.
Second - Make certain these are enabled.

- Scan my library automatically
- Run a partial scan when changes are detected

Before proceeding further, Let’s confirm you need to increase the notify table size.

1. Make certain DEBUG [server logging](https://support.plex.tv/articles/200250417-plex-media-server-log-files/) is enabled & VERBOSE logging is disabled.
2. Restart the server
3. Let it sit completely idle for 2-3 minutes while Notify loads the table.
4. Download the [server logs](https://support.plex.tv/articles/200250417-plex-media-server-log-files/) ZIP file (Settings - server - Troubleshooting - Download Logs
5. Attach it here.

This will let is confirm it’s a table size problem or it’s something else.

Once we’ve confirmed it’s just the table size which needs adjusting, we can proceed with the Linux Tips instructions

@Massimiliano54

This is interesting, it didn’t complete loading the music library before you grabbed the logs.

```auto
```

Would you mind repeating this but waiting a few more minutes so we know we’ll capture the error ? ( It seems pretty obvious the music library is what’s filling the table )

When you get the total, you can either do it this way or with a calculator (using only the integer values)

```auto
[chuck@glockner vol.2002]$ find ./media ./plex/qa -type d -print | wc -l
114182
[chuck@glockner vol.2003]$ expr 114182 / 32768
3
[chuck@glockner vol.2004]$ expr 32768 \* 4
131072
[chuck@glockner vol.2005]$
```

It you want to add more (yet another 32768 directories) that’s find.
just remember each notify slot uses 540+Length\_of\_path bytes which is taken from non-paged kernel memory (not swap)

If the total number of slots you already have `systctl -a | grep user_watches` is greater than what the need, we need to see what else is happening.

This is where the longer running Logs file ZIP will help

WOW,

Even after 15 minutes, it’s STILL adding directories.

It looks like `/mnt/music` and (mostly) `/mnt/music2` are the problems.

Do you have more?

Let’s get the count of the total number of directories used for Music
( This will take a while )

```auto
time find /mnt/music* -type d -print | wc -l
```

This command will print out how long it took to count all the directories then print out the number of directories actually found.

We can then add whatever might be needed for Movies , Series, and/or Photos

Yes there are those 2: “music” and “music 2”, there are no other main directories.

Please run the `find` command I shared above.

It’ll tell us how many you have.

I am surprised that after 15 minutes, it was still loading directories.

Ok, so it’s the NAS which is struggling. Let it struggle. It’s designed to take the punishment.

We really do need that total.

As for the “Permission denied” errors, let’s up the ante

```auto
time sudo find /mnt/music* -type d -print | wc -l
```

EDIT: You will need to fix those permission denied problems for PMS to work right (we’ll fix that next)

Hi, I entered the modified string but the result was the same (permission denied). The scan is extremely slow. I have about 60,000 folders for each album, and 200-300 folders in superdirectories. Should the scan list every album folder? If so, it would take a few months. I don’t know how to proceed. I installed PMS directly on the NAS to test it. Once I’ve loaded all the music, I’ll be able to see if it runs well (the NAS is a slightly older Synology 916+ from 2016). I can definitely see that the automatic scan works as expected. I might even decide to buy a new NAS for this purpose. However, solving this problem with the NUC running Ubuntu Server would be the best option (and also to save money). Is there any other way to proceed?

All the files are on the Synology, correct?

Login to the NAS and use Synology File Station. Right click on the folder holding the media and choose Properties. It will take a few minutes, but it will show the folder count. Repeat as needed to cover all media files, then add up the numbers.

Example from my Synology for my tv show folder:
