I’m hosting Plex on my Synology NAS, when playing content through a web browser on my IPad it works fine, however if I try using the iOS app it tells me I need a subscription.

My understanding was that if it was on the local network I wouldn’t need a remote streaming pass, so looks to be an issue with the iOS app itself.

Anyone else had this or am I missing something ?

Your information is a little incorrect and only applies if you have a Plex Pass, which I would encourage you to purchase.

To use the iOS app without having a Plex Pass, you need to pay the app purchase fee which is $5 USD if memory serves and can be purchased through the Apple store I believe.

It also does NOT provide all of the benefits of a Plex Pass.

A Plex Pass allows you to use any Plex app on any device without the need to purchase the individual apps. There are many other benefits to having a Plex Pass that you may find appealing.

This page will help you purchase a Plex Pass and provide more details about the benefits I mentioned:

**Note:** The new Plex experience app for iOS is free to use, so you may wish to install that instead of the legacy app.

Thanks, I do have a plex pass, and I don’t know if there was some sort of issue that was resolved at Plex’s end because I’ve done nothing but it’s just started working as expected on both devices.

Your forum handle does not show a Plex Pass, that’s why I assumed you did not have one.

You may have had a temporary network connection issue preventing the server/app from accessing your account info.

In any case, I’m glad things are working for you.

Happy Plexing! 🙂

Thanks, I’ve never needed to use the forums before so hadn’t modified my profile at all, will update.

Definitely wasn’t a network issue as all other devices worked as expected, was literally just the iOS application.

Either way it’s fixed now, thanks for responding

You might want to catch up on this announcement from earlier this year.
In short:

- Remote Access is no longer free — it’ll require either the server owner from where you’re streaming to have a Plex Pass OR you having a Plex Pass OR you having a „Watch Pass“
- The mobile apps no longer require a one-time activation
- There’s a free „Watch Pass“ trial for users who previously paid to unlock the old mobile apps
- No change to local-only playback
