# Plex Updates always require I reset up my media server

Whenever I update my Plex Media server, my previous setup will no longer be reachable. Let’s say my PMS was “My\_PMS”. After the install, it will tell me it found a media server “My\_PMS” and asks if I’d like to connect. I connect to it but then the plex interface shows I have two My\_PMS servers. One is unreachable and the other is a brand new server with the same name. I then need to set each library, scan and figure out how to remove the old unreachable server.
Any of the remote players also need to reset up. This is a royal pain! What am I doing wrong?
I am on the latest server, on Windows 10 (also current). 1.18.0.1913 is the current Plex server version.

Are you running your Windows in a special security mode?
Are you accessing your Windows only per remote desktop?
Do you use any type of “Registry cleaner” or “Privancy enhancer” software?

How are you updating?
Please describe each step you take.
You are not using software like CCleaner or Revo uninstaller, right?

I open the plex web client on my win10 computer and it indicates it has an update to apply. I click to apply the update. Once it is complete, I open the web client again and it indicates it found a plex server. I select it and click to associate it with the server. Then it prompts me to setup all the media libraries like it’s new.

oh, no CCleaner or revo uninstaller. It’s a clean install of win10. I rebuilt an old laptop with a fresh installation of Win10. The only thing on it is Plex. Full disclosure, I run Plex as a service using plex service tray. The service runs under a Win10 User account, no admin privileges. I have had to update the media folders running it as a service and running it without the service.

AFAIK, you cannot use the inbuilt update mechanism if you run as service.
Try
- download
- shutting down server and service loader
- run the installer manually from the [Plex data folder](https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/202915258-Where-is-the-Plex-Media-Server-data-directory-located- "Plex data folder")/Updates
- startup the service loader

I have un-installed the service so I’ll have to try doing a regular update next time. If that works, I’ll try to run as service again and follow that upgrade procedure.
