Plex v5 is definitely not kid friendly

I really think that the whole Plex team and the test team must be kid-free.

Much has already been said about the issue of mixing all librairies together by type and the negative impact it can have so I won't repeat it here again (even if the issue is major for me).

News was added a while back and up until recently there was no way to completely remove it that I know of.
Now I removed it from my kid profile but I am still not sure if he can put it back without me knowing or not.

But worse...
Now you have Podcast.
And even if you remove it from the home screen podcasts are still available via search.
So if I type sex or porn in the search field for a managed user with access only to appropriate libraries...
I get "sex toys and sex offenders", "can feminist porn give you the horn".
All things that I don't want to give access my kid to.

Seriously, Plex was (mostly) super cool because when it was "screen time" you could live your kid in front of its specific user and you knew that he would have access only to content you had validated.

I already had issues in the past with the on deck category because it shows content to all users whatever their privileges as long as the library was eligible to on deck status. So for example I realised once that my kid had on deck episodes of horror shows. And even though he couldn't watch the actual episode, just seeing the poster I had specifically chosen for the show frightened him (he was 8, I believe at the time). There was also a stupid show I watched without my wife knowing because she was "against it" whatever that means. And... well when I got caught because the show which was restricted to my account only showed up in her on deck. It was marked as unavailable for her but she still saw it was there.

Overall I think the changes in UI are going in the way of looks more than the way of usability. And that's a shame.

PS : while writing this message I googled the possibility to remove news access and I found a link to the Plex account web page.
Seriously ? You can do it from your Plex website account but not from the app or the server ? I don't think this is great design. All settings should be easily available at least from the server module (it could be a link to the plex website settings but it should be easily accessible). Still I disabled podcasts for all managed users (which is limiting too, so if I want to prevent my kid, my wife can't use it ?). But the thing is, even disabled... my kid account still has access to podcasts via search.

It is a pity because I really love Plex, I am a Plex life user and I have been advocating for it around me for a long time.
But unless things change fast I believe I will now move to the Infuse client.
:-(

@Thierry-B I’m sorry to hear you’re having difficulties with the new release. I’ve been trying to replicate being able to search podcasts when it’s disabled for managed users, and I’ve not been able to. I can see the podcast media type, but I can’t search anything from it. If you could replicate this and post some logs, it would be much appreciated.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for getting back to me. It is really appreciated.
I’ve attached the log from an iOS client logged in on my son account just after making the search I was talking about.
I’ve also joined you a screen shot of the online Media sources from my main account that shows how news and podcasts are supposed to be disabled for managed users.

Hopefully you can help.

One thing I must say though. I understand you must be swamped in work.
And I also know change IS hard because some will always resent it.
However I can also say that is super frustrating as a user when the Plex team don’t even address our issues.
So I really appreciate that you’re taking the time to try to address the podcast issue.
But at the same time I would have liked a comment an acknowledgement… anything about the other topics I raised.
Nothing on the libraries topic (not on this thread, but not on any thread either).
Nothing on the “on deck” trouble (true I found a workaround but I believe it shouldn’t show content not shared with a specific user in the first place anyway don’t you think ?).
On another thread I explained that the content I had synced on a device was available to all managed users on the same device whatever the shared status of the original video. That is a mega big issue for me too. Still no answer.
And so on…

Anyway, thanks for your help.

On Deck: Is this still an issue for you right now? I was discussing some of your reported issues with some others and I was told that it’d be great to have some screen captures/photos (if it was on your TV) as that should definitely not happen, where On Deck shows to other accounts even though they can’t play the item(s).

Nah, it is just that most of the Plex team, starting at the top, does not care at all about the end user.
This new UI is horrible, but they don’t care. Not caring for the user base has been the Plex mantra for a while now.

I cannot access all my libraries such as those that I set up for Music Videos, Home Movies, etc. As of now, my PlexPass is nearly useless. Why would you make such a drastic change and not give us the ability to roll it back?

#7

My feelings exactly. I’m going to post about it here as well. we want home-brew highly customizable media server and they want to make it look like Netflix .

we want private logins and they want Google and Facebook logins. We want media content local and private and they want to put it in the cloud.

We want tv and movies, and they want to dump every media type possble into the app.

No no no. Plex != Netflix . The user base and use cases are completely different .

@Thierry-B Thanks for the logs. I’m having a look into the issue now, and will get to your other issues too. Just wanted to get through them one at a time.

Hi,

I wasn’t sure if that was still going on or not (as I had made changes in my set up to mitigate for the glitch) so I’ve tried to see specifically if the problem still arises and… no.
So that is a good thing.

But I can describe fairly well the issue.
The cover of the TV show would appear (it never happened with movies I think) in the “newly added” category.
If the managed user would try to watch the show it would say that the show was unavailable.
On the web client there was the same big red button unavailable as when a file has been moved/deleted/renamed.
If I connected back to my main user I could see it properly without issues (it was available on the server).

To be a little more specific, the managed users had access to the library where the content was but had restrictions rules. If a show didn’t have the right sharing tag they couldn’t watch it but could see it existed. I never had this problem with content from a library that was not shared at all with a user. I hope I’m clear…

I agree. I wish that I could disable the deleting of playlists, songs in a playlist and now with version 5, the “Reorder Home Screen” button that is for some reason at the bottom of the home screen (I don’t know why that’s there… there has to be better place or way to do that than just at the bottom of the screen; it looks crappy. You never see view state buttons at the bottom of a list). Kids love to push great big red buttons (read: the “Delete” playlist button) and can surprisingly screw things up pretty bad in just a minute or two!

“Managed users” has been pretty useless since it was first introduced. I run a separate instance of Plex to isolate the kid stuff from the adult stuff. Kiddy Plex can only access folders with kiddy stuff, nothing they can do can pull up adult stuff.

That also handles the problems of “on deck” or “recently added” displaying something that shouldn’t be there.

Your solution works, that’s for sure but…
It is not very practical.
It also means you need to buy a second plex pass.

It does work, indeed it has been working for years in my house, and it is easy and practical. Not sure what strikes you as problematic about it.

Why would you think I’d need a second plex pass?

not practical because on a single device you either need to sign in / sign out all the time (not practical) or I don’t get it.

regarding the Plex Pass thing… Maybe it has changed, but it used to be that you couldn’t use some versions of the app over the internet if you weren’t Plex Pass. So if you were to have a Plex account (not a managed user) for the kid… well, no Plex Pass ?

But maybe I didn’t understand what you were saying.

Exactly THIS is the problem. You can see it on other v5 topics. No reaction from Plex team. They absolutly ignore the problems. The did it in the past, they do it now and they‘ll do it in the future.
If you ask me, I would never pay again for Plex. Unfortunatly I payed for lifetime.

In the previous plex app on iOS I could get to my movies by searching first letter of alphabet. Do not see away to do it with new interface. Can it be done now?
