Server Version#: Mac 1.19.1.2645
Player Version#: 3.0.0 Plexamp for iOS

![Screen Shot 2020-04-17 at 1.24.44 PM](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/plex/original/3X/7/d/7d234a7ecf8e75e8a374bef66c95e7f9309a1327.png)

As indicated in the graphic, Plexamp supposedly supported by iOS devices such as my iPhone 4s running iOS 9.3.6. The Plex app does run but there has been a declared end of iOS 9 support for that app. Anyway, I was able to download and launch Plexamp on my 4s, but when it comes time to Sign In, it launches a safari window that is rendered blank. I am not able to activate the app. I am not able to log into Plex.tv on Safari on this phone, it brings up the pop up window but its contents are blank.

Is Plexamp now considered part of the Plex family of apps and will be further developed or is this still considered experimental and lab based? It sure would be nice to get Plexamp working on the 4s since it is connected to a nice JBL dock. Yes, I can continue using the standard Plex app but since the 4s only does music, I figured Plexamp would be less resource hungry and more responsive.

Plexamp is not officially supported. Do you have any website restrictions setup on your iPhone? Or are you running something like OpenDNS that may be blocking the login from happening?

My everyday use phone, an iPhone 8 located on the same network, has no difficulty opening, signing in, and activating Plexamp. The iphone 4s has nothing on it but stock software and Plex. Again, it is simply used for music, like an iPod. Unfortunately it appears that Safari on this phone cannot open Plex’s sign in screen due to whatever HTML language is used to create the login page. The regular Plex app has the sign in page built into the app, not sending the request out to the browser, which is what Plexamp is doing. Due to the phone’s age, I cannot install Firefox or Chrome on it any longer as the iOS version is no longer supported.

I also have a problem with not being able to sign in to Plexamp on my ipod touch with ios 9.3.5. That is the latest ios version for my ipod touch model PD715LL/A.
When I open the plexamp app and click on sign in, it opens a blank webpage. If I force it to use Safari, I also get a blank screen.
The app says it’s supported on ios version 8 and up.
How can I use the app with my ios version 9 ipod touch?

Hi @PGalati and @FQs19,

Out of interest, would you be able to check whether the main [https://app.plex.tv/](https://app.plex.tv/) website works in Safari on these devices? Specifically, I’m looking for any issues with the sign in flow that you may experience there.

I’ve the same problem on my iPad 3. Can’t login because of a empty page. Try to launch [https://app.plex.tv](https://app.plex.tv) but only get the plex logo on a black page

Trying to sign in via the app or the web page you provided gives us the same results. It doesn’t seem to be a Plexamp issue, but more of a webkit (Safari’s engine) incompatibility between that last installed version on iOS 9.3.x and Plex’s sign in page.

Thanks for looking into this.

I don’t think there are any workarounds for now, but bear with us because 🤞 I think we’ve been able to narrow down where the issue is. Hopefully a fix will be available soon. I’ll keep you posted.

We’ll unfortunately need to raise the minimum iOS version required of the app to 10.x, we didn’t realize the web auth portion wouldn’t work with that old a browser on the earlier iOS versions ☹

The regular Plex iOS app works on iOS 9 and is able to authenticate. Is it possible to use this authentication mechanism for Plex Amp too? Btw Plex Desk has the same problem on iOS 9.

Per App Store release notes for the main app:

```auto
NOTE: This will be the last version of the app with support for iOS 10 & 11.
```

We would have to write custom authentication for the app, which we can avoid by using the web-based component.

Substitute the word “realize” with “test” is probably the more accurate statement.

I get that you need to move on with development of the app but adding to the App Store with the flag that allows an iOS 9 OS to download the App does reveal the lack of thorough testing, IMO. It is a shame this app can’t tie into the authentication that the Plex App already logged in on the phone. How about doing the 4 character code method, like set top boxes?

Sure, all the versions would have been daunting to test. Also, during review Apple asked us to bring the browser in-app, which would prevent people from using their own browser (copying/pasting URL over, e.g.)

Sure.

Apple almost certainly wouldn’t go for that.

I know this is the latest release for the regular Plex app on iOS 9, but this doesn’t have to be changed because it works on iOS 9.

> [@elan](#):

The custom authentication is already in place and it works because users can user the regular Plex app on iOS 9. What might be a consideration is to have a fall back scenario in case the user works with Plex Amp/Desk on a iOS 9 device. In this case the ‘old’ authentication mechanism could be used.

I’m asking this because Plex is such a nice app with a wonderful GUI. It would be a pity if the only reason to increase the minimum iOS version because of the authentication. Please consider the fall back scenario. Thank you.

So let’s not even try.

Will new installs of AppleTV wanting the Plex app be forced to use the new browser in-app method instead of the 4 character activation if Apple is forcing you to move that way? Wonder how that will work when AppleTV doesn’t have a browser to open the auth page.

This is a good example of planned obsolescence which is so unfortunate in this world of everything is disposable. The tech in question obviously still works, you tested it, but yet the method of authentication isn’t attainable.

At least the Plex app still can access a server, FOR NOW.

No. Totally different interaction modality.

I agree, it’s a pity, but we have to prioritize what we work on unfortunately.
