PMP will not launch in Windows 7 SP1 VM

Server Version#: 1.16.1.1246
Player Version#: 2.35.1

I’m running Windows 7 SP1 64-bit in a VirtualBox VM, running on Linux Mint 17.1.

When I try to launch PMP, It briefly appears on the task bar, then goes away. In Windows Task Manager, there is a PMPHelper.exe that starts when I try to launch PMP, but it does not go away. It doesn’t matter if PMPHelper.exe is already running, or if I kill it before trying to launch PMP.

Several versions ago (don’t know how many), PMP would generally work. At times I had to kill PMPHelper.exe before launching PMP, but that always did the trick. Now, it doesn’t help.

I’ve attached the Plex logs, captured just after an occurrence of the problem. I don’t see anything obvious, but I attached them just in case. Windows Event Viewer doesn’t have any events that mention PMP. I’m not sure what else to look for.

Any suggestions?

Would like to get PMP working. Any ideas to resolve or troubleshoot this?

Those are the server logs. Is PMP creating logs of it’s own?

Thanks for responding. I’ll check tonight. It didn’t occur to me that PMP would keep its own.

Here are two log files created after attempting to launch PMP.

PlexMediaPlayerLogs.zip (5.0 KB)

Good news: I had an old version of Plex Media Server installed on this VM, as well as Plex Home Theatre. I uninstalled both of these, as well as PMP, and cleaned up the folders they left behind. Then I re-installed the latest PMP, and it is working.

When I launch PMP now, I initially get the following:

Once I dismiss this, PMP launches and appears to operate normally, so it doesn’t seem to be a catastrophic problem, but I wonder if anyone knows what’s going on, and can I do anything about it.

I am waiting to hear from some someone that knows Windows more than me. Wonder if it is a 32bit vs 64bit thing.

your helper log indicates it made some crash dumps but I they were probably deleted when you uninstalled. C:/Users/Ken/AppData/Local/cache/PlexMediaPlayer/crashdumps/

I was going to see if the dmp file was zero length and see if there was an event log entry for the crash - but now you have pasted the start up error - the failure is within a virtual box module - https://github.com/sailfishos/virtualbox/blob/master/virtualbox/src/VBox/Runtime/win/RTErrConvertFromWin32.cpp

Why are you running PMP in a VM on windows ?

I’m running Windows 7 in a VM. The host is Linux Mint 17.1. I wish there was a Linux version of PMP.

Like this:

I was not aware of that. I’ll give it a go. Thanks!

Unfortunately, Mint 17 is based on Ubuntu 14.04, and neither the AppImage or Flatpak will work. Guess I finally have a reason to upgrade the OS.
