Port Forwarding Blowing my Mind

What is your internet provider?
This could be a CG-NAT/Dual Stack Lite problem.

Globe (in the Philippines)

No idea what the problem you mentioned means. I read something about double stack issues if you have a separate modem and router, mine is just one unit though.

Indeed they seem to do CG-NAT:

Long story short: you probably don’t have a public IPv4 dedicated to your line and therefore your Plex server is not reachable from IPv4 networks from the outside. This is what a lot of internet providers do nowadays since we ran out of IPv4 addresses.
You can call them and ask for a dedicated IPv4 or real Dual Stack (not lite). This might cost extra money (as suggested in the thread). The providers also often offer business accounts that come with a static IPv4 (for a higher price obviously).

Ok thanks, so the terminology I need to use with their Tech Support is:

“I need a static IPv4 address so I can remote access my server.” ?

I would call and say you have problems accessing your security camera (or any other device you can make up) from away from home. You heard this might be due to IPv4 “restrictions” and if they can provide either a dedicated dynamic or static IPv4 (the latter will definitely cost extra).

Can you show us a screenshot of the router’s interface where it says something about the ISP connection and you public IPs? Probably at “Status”.

I have to admit that at this stage it is not 100% clear whether you are affected by CG-NAT or if you just misconfigured your router for the port forward

Yes, but now I am lost

  1. You don’t seem have an IPv6 address, which I would have expected.
  2. Your IPv4 is 10.x.x.x.x which is normally is reserved for local networks.
  3. Your public IP in Plex is different to that IP shown here.

Obviously I have no clue how your connection works, sorry.

One last thing: please visit https://test-ipv6.com/index.html.en_US and post the output (screenshot). You can obfuscate your public IPs if you want to.

In this test my IPv4 is the same as what Plex has as ‘Public’

Ok thanks, so it works differently from what we have on this side of the globe. I am still not sure whether CG-NAT is an issue as the reddit posts suggested. But I might be wrong and the people there use the mobile internet of Globe and I might have confused both

Maybe @OttoKerner can take over again after I caused this major confusion  Sorry I couldn’t be of help and only made trouble

There is nothing one can do now.
@Coxeroni your test confirmed that the ISP put its customers behind CG-NAT and also doesn’t have support for IPv6 at all.
This now places the ball firmly in their court.

You need to contact your ISP and ask them about a way to have a port forwarding to your router – i.e. a publicly reachable IPv4 address.
It doesn’t have to be a static address as such. It can be dynamically assigned, as long as it is not changing as fast as e.g. ‘every hour’.

It does? Where? In fact that was the aim of the exercise, although I expected something different. For me it only shows that steven has an IPv4 only connection.

haha Actually, while it doesn’t work yet, I still feel like we made some kind of progress.

For the Port Forwarding config, on my screen shot above, the only option in the entire list that has a place for Ports is the Virtual Server, with the options configured as shown.

Globe has 3 types of internet connections here.
1)Wireless LTE (mobile) - a router with a SIM card connected to an antenna pointing to a cell tower.
2) DSL which is what I have
3) Fibr but not available in my area

Tried my best, not an expert either, especially not for internet on the Philippines

So grab the phone and use that security camera approach. They will tell you what your options are.

Unfortunately it doesn’t work the opposite of the US here. You call Tech Support in the US and get the Philippines. You call Tech Support from the Philippines
 you don’t get the US
still the Philippines (but even worse English) LOL

Lol, you have to work on your Filipino then  Probably straight forward and easy to learn

No, it’s India - subtitles are necessary, but unavailable.

It must be a requirement in the Outsourced Support Industry that you must speak English well enough to order a Big Mac in Detroit (when other Indians are are taking your order), but with an accent so diabolical it sounds like Klingon to West Virginians.

We need subtitles to watch Doc Martin (or go to Food Lion in Maryland) - but the head cheese in the Offshore Support Industry thinks Indian Support is working fine in Appalachia.

and when people complain about Plex Support - I laugh (in Redneck English).

Went around in circles a couple times with my provider. They want 40% more than my current bill to add a Static IP address. I would done it right away if it was a one time fee, but not monthly.

How come tech support can connect to my computer and I have no issues using a remote access program like Team Viewer, but Plex is not able to connect?

Teamviewer does something similar to the Plex Relay connection. https://support.plex.tv/articles/216766168-accessing-a-server-through-relay/
They can afford this because a remote control session only uses relatively low bandwidth.

You can use Plex relay, but it only allows 1mbps bandwidth (without Plex pass). That’s good enough for music, but video is very poor quality.

Ah ok, thanks. One of those things that falls under ‘same thing only different’.

I read the " Accessing a Server through Relay" 3 times and searched ‘relay’. I understand (enough I think) how it works - but there are no instructions. Also I read the note: Note that not all of our apps yet support connecting through “Relay”.

How do you connect by Relay, which apps Do Support Relay?

Thanks,
Steve

All officially supported clients do now support relay. Just go outside of your home network and open the Plex app.
On the server, “Secure Connections” must not be ‘disabled’ for this to work.

OK, so it is ‘automatic’ from my perspective?
My Secure Connections is set to Preferred. To allow a friend to access do I just fill out the Users & Sharing - Friends, select what I want to share and put in their email?
