Public Service Announcement: QTS 4.4.1

28 Oct 2019

Per conversation about issues with QTS 4.4.1.1081 and 4.4.1.1101,

QNAP has advised Plex that QTS 4.4.1 has been withdrawn back to BETA status for stability and performance reasons.

Observed issues:

  • Dashboard fails to populate
  • Network file services I/O performance extremely slow
  • Unexplained system lock-up.

Corrective Action

  • Download previous firmware from QNAP if not already resident locally. https://www.qnap.com/en/download
  • Manually install firmware (Control Panel -> Firmware Update -> Firmware Update

This means:

  • The officially supported version of QTS remains as QTS 4.3.6 (~ 4.3.6.1070)

  • QNAP does advise downgrading firmware to 4.3.6 until the next series of updates if the above issues are seen.

  • Additional QNAP support is always available in their forums as well as QNAP directly and is recommended for other QNAP issues.

  • Plex advises letting us check the new update(s) before you do if you’re uncomfortable trying the new firmware when finally available.

  • To avoid any ambiguity: If you are having problems with your QTS 4.4.1 stability or PMS on QTS 4.4.1, QNAP and Plex recommend reverting to the officially supported QTS 4.3.6 version.

This thread will remain open to address any issues arising from this firmware status change which impact Plex Media Server.

Interesting. I’ve been having all sorts of issues between Plex and QNAP. My libraries not loading. insecure connections. losing access to libraries if they are idle (not used) for more than 60 minutes. I’ve noted it keeps insisting that Plex updates don’t have digital signatures. QNAP helpdesk have tried to help but never suggested that it might be a firmware issue. Not sure, (I"m at the office) what my QNAP firmware version is but this could explain the problem. From this post above I take it I should NOT downgrade to 4.3.6? or I should?

I am stating precisely that you should consider downgrading to QTS 4.3.6.1070 (or closest version available for your model) unless there are specific QTS features you require for your other needs.

that’s what I figured but there was ambiguity. thanks. I’ll do it now as I am on 4.1.1.

Ok. I get the following warning msg. hence my confusion with your message.

This is correct.

Depending on what apps you have installed, you will need to uninstall the QTS 4.4.1 versions and re-download the QTS 4.3.6 versions.

This is normal. Do not be alarmed.

Have they mentioned anything to you about the nvidia drivers so we can upgrade pms beyond 1.16

There has been no update of NVIDIA drivers.

PLEASE keep this thread ON-TOPIC.

Has there been any updates to this?

No. I will post when QNAP sends me communication otherwise but I believe all QNAP customers will receive notification through QNAP’s normal distribution channels.

Don’t know about a QTS recall. But Qnap just released a new build of 4.4.1 today.

This might be the update we are waiting for.

PLEASE keep me advised?

I have noticed that with a recent upgrade of QTS that PMS has been a bit more laggy, but at least bearable.

Hopefully the update today will fix things – I will try to update when I get home tonight. If it doesn’t, with the recent news of malware infecting Qnap NAS servers, should the more prudent step be to wait for a more stable version of QTS rather than downgrade to an earlier QTS firmware version?

QTS 4.4.1 represented a significant loss in file system performance.

I conveyed my findings to QNAP who also confirmed they saw the drop as well.

One can only hope this update addresses some of that lost performance or corrects it entirely.

Well, let’s hope, but the version notes didn’t really mention that.

Can we get a link to some official documentation from Qnap or even copies of communications between you and Qnap regarding this? I don’t see anywhere in the Release notes from 4.4.1 that it is to be avoided and people should be downgrading to 4.3.6. Id really like to hear more especially since I just upgraded to 4.4.1 Thanks

At this point, QNAP did re-release 4.4.1

I would like to close this thread.

While I continue to have issues with 4.4.1 on a TVS-1282-i7-7700, I believe those unique to my configuration (PCIe SSD cache).

When operating without the cache enabled, PMS is behaving as expected.
