Question for 4K TV owners

If you stream your video files through Plex that are at a lower resolution then 4K, does the TV do the upscaling?

For example, I connect my pc to my current tv through HDMI and use PMP to stream my files (1080p and lower). If I similarly connect my pc to a 4K television, will the tv take care of the upscaling of the files? Would using other streaming devices (Roku for example) also behave the same?

It’s sometimes confusing because there are blu-ray players that upscale, there are receivers that upscale, etc. Will the tv ultimately perform this task if it sees that it is a requirement?

Not quite ready for a 4K tv yet, but this is one of my many questions in regards. Personally, I need that upscaling to be near perfect for me to pull the trigger as I do not want to buy a 4K tv, run my lower rez files through it and “live with” the results.

Yes…every modern TV that I’m aware of has internal scaling capabilities. Some components scale better than others. You’ll typically find that your TV’s internal scaler is superior to the scaler built into your bluray players, streamers, etc…but you might need to experiment with your own components. Having bluray players and streamers with their own scaling capabilities can be useful, however, when you are using a projector…which often don’t have their own scalers.

Great, thanks

No problem at all: all my components are set to 1080p. Only the TV at the very end of the chain scales up to 4k. Image quality is nice.

Honestly … in most scenarios where the TV is sized around 55" and you are about 3-4 meters away you won’t see a difference between 1080p and 4k.
