Is there any method for installing RasPlex under a virtual machine? I believe OpenElec provides an install script to create a VMware .vmx file but not sure if this can be used for RasPlex.

It would be useful to be able to install RasPlex in a VM for testing purposes.

I don't think any available hypervisors support emulating ARM on an x86 server.

According to the OpenELEC wiki, its supported under VMware.

It says that the x86 version of OpenELEC is supported.

```
PROJECT=Virtual ARCH=i386 make release
```

Raspberry Pis run on ARM chips, which are not compatible with x86.

Furthermore, I'm not sure how useful running ARM OpenELEC on a virtual machine would be even if it were possible; Many of the challenges facing Plex on Pi are due to the hardware; A Virtualized Pi would have different performance, and it would only virtualize the ARM core; you would be missing things like hardware video acceleration.

At any rate, there is a Pi emulator, if you want to try that. [http://sourceforge.net/projects/rpiqemuwindows/](http://sourceforge.net/projects/rpiqemuwindows/)

What is the reasoning behind running RasPlex on VMWare? You could just as well run the Windows version.

Building OpenELEC for VirtualBox is supported and works fine. But RasPlex is OpenELEC + PlexHT and thus needs some more special tweaks.

I've tried to setup a development build using the "Virtual" target some time ago - but I've never got a full build. But I haven't invested much time into this...

Thus: It should work but needs some work. We would be glad to get a pull request which enables full Virtual support...

Btw: The same is true for any other OpenELEC project target...
