Remote Communications Server - Failed To Start

server-mac

#1

Hi.

I am running Plex Media Server and Plex Home Theater on OS X 10.8, as well as the iOS apps on my iPads and iPhone quite successfully for a number of years... until yesterday.

Now for some reason I have two issues:

Whenever I launch PHTheater on my Mac (Mini) I get the error: Remote Communications Server - Failed To Start

But then everything else seems fine on the local machine.

However, when I try to view any content from my iPhone or iPad, nothing will play. This is whether I'm local on the same network (aka in-house) or remote via wifi at a friends, over LTE, etc. I can see the library, chose content, but when I select to play it, it looks like it's about to load and then just sits there till the screen goes blank.

I've re-booted, updated to the latest PMS (0.9.8.15.275-4677983), restarted my router, cable modem, etc but to no avail.

Please help if you have any ideas.

Thanks.

Getting the same error, relevant log snippet:

It appears I had MobileMouseServer running on port 9090, check listening ports with:

sudo lsof -i -P | grep -i "listen"

I changed the port and everything is fine now

Hmmm... I'll check but I'm pretty sure I don't have MobileMouseServer running... if I run that command it'll show what i have running to see if there are conflicts?

It appears I had MobileMouseServer running on port 9090, check listening ports with:

sudo lsof -i -P | grep -i "listen"

I changed the port and everything is fine now

Thanks! I had the same issue! For me it was SabNzBD which was using HTTPS @ TCP:9090

#6

Thanks ndaversa!!  Same issue with Mobile Mouse.  I would have never figured that out! You just saved me a ton of time!  Thanks

#7

Thank you very much to all of you.

I also had MobileMouseServer running on port 9090.

Is Plex disclosing anywhere that Plex Theater listens on port 9090?

I did not find the information.

Having the same problem, had trashed all settings and the problem remains… I'll check ports now, thanks for the tip.

Edit: I had rumpus running on port 9090. Stopped the rumpus server, now this message is gone! :)

I also have the "Remote Communications Server - Failed To Start" message when starting Plex Home Theater.

Not sure where the trouble is.  Here is what is see when I run  sudo lsof -i -P | grep -i "listen"

In my case, it was Logitech Media Server (Squeezebox), specifically the CLI interface. Happily, this can be configured in the LMS web interface.

#13

I also use LMS, what have you changed in web configuration for Plex to annihilate remote communications server problem?

I changed port number, problem disappeared.

#14

I'm showing perl5.18 using port 9090. How would I change that...?

#15

Thanks ndaversa the info you provided is still helping. saved me a good bit of searching.

The updated link to the advancedsettings.xml wiki page. I needed to change the jsonrpc port.
