Hey Folks,
My older QNAP nas died over the weekend. Appears to be somthing to do with the CPU… board triggers overheat warning, and it doesn’t make it far past the BIOS POST screen before freezing up. Process to reinit the onboard OS failed, as the machine won’t go past a certain point in the boot process trying any method. Anyways… time to get a new NAS and I should stick with a QNAP such that my data volume can just be picked up by the new unit.
I was looking at the TS-453Bmini. It appears to be a solid option for my home NAS and Plex server. I had issues on my old machine where transcoding was required, and so used Direct Play whenever possible but on some where SubTitles were required, it was simply un-watchable.
It sounds like any of the newer Intel chips with QSV should now work for HW-level transcoding in Plex. Does anyone on here have one of the 453Bmini devices and can confirm that HW transcoding is working? Working well?
Since this is a somewhat unexpected purchase, I’d like to keep my costs down, but would also consider something more expensive if necessary. But that may not be necessary if HW transcoding is now working well on this cheaper device. Thanks ahead of time for any of your input! Cheers!
Depending on how quick you need it, I would probably look at the TS-453b or newly announced TS-453be (likely not in retailers catalog yet).
They both have the same CPU as the 453bmini, but much more versatile in terms of expansion and not that much more. The TS-453be is likely to be pretty close to the 453bmini in terms of price.
Yes, I see that they are fairly close and running the same processor. Ultimately it would come down to price as I’m unlikely to use the upgrade slots. However, I have found a retailer for the TS-453B for less then $75 more than the mini. For that I’m willing to get the more capabilities. Don’t think I’d want to wait for the TS-453Be, mostly because we don’t have access to our family photos etc… while this thing is down.
That being said this didn’t really answer my base question which was if the HW Transcoding is working on this unit with the Celeron J3455. I’ve had issues transcoding with my previous setup and would like to ensure large 1080p files aren’t a proplem, even when playing on the older Roku3.

Subs can’t make use of the Hardware Transcoder, so if you still need to use and transcode subs you still need a chip with speed. That CPU is fine for a single 1080p transcode, and HW transcoding wise works fine as long as you don’t need 10bit HVEC.
Great, thanks all. @MwC_Trexx , I found a good price on the TS-453B-8GB, very close to the price I previously saw for the mini. So, I decided to go with the non-mini. Just ordered a TS-453B-8G!
Thanks for responses everyone. @trudge , I wasn’t aware that the Subs didn’t use the HW Transcoder. Good to know. This processor seems to be much higher performing than my old NAS so hopefully that’s a non-issue anyways.
(Passmark 2140 vs 1027, and 8gb RAM vs 1gb RAM)
Doing some research looks like the Celeron J3455 is probably the performance champ and comparing prices… the 463B seems like the best bang for the buck.
I just got off the phone with qnap earlier today and they painted a pretty clear picture of success transcoding via j3455 hardware using plex pass. it looks like a 453b may be in my future although I haven’t yet ruled out synology’s 918+ which uses the same processor
well past performance isn’t a guarantee of future results lol. but some real measurements of these two would be cool. 453Be would be the same as the other 453s I would think
