Roku TV - Blinking LED only when using Plex App

On all of my Roku TV's the LED light on the TV blinks about once every 15 seconds when streaming a movie using Plex - which is quite distracting. This does not happen when streaming a movie on Emby, Netflix, when the TV is on the home screen, or when using HDMI inputs. Can we be given an option to disable this?

My Roku 3's light blinks when there's no internet connection or it can't phone home. I don't know if this will go anywhere, but it could be some issue with the level of security keeping the thing from being in contact with the Plex Mother Ship - or something.

A blinking light is usually the warning klaxon that something has gone haywire. Fix whatever that is and the light will probably quiet down.

Since I do not have Roku TVs, rather I have regular Rokus, I cannot verify the problem but I can say that regular Rokus do not have that problem.

But there is a fix or at least a workaround: Whenever I have an led whose light detracts from my watching comfort I cover it with a small unobtrusive piece of black electrical tape. The only caveat is that I have to be careful not to cover any ir sensors as doing so results in poor or no operation. But, usually, manufactures do not place sensors particularly close to emitters as that can cause problems that are easily avoided by proper placement.

The other thing that tape causes is that the led is no longer visible or at least it is extremely dim. But that is, for me, no real problem as most of the time I find that led indicators are simply redundant at best.

Thanks for the replies, but electrical tape is a crude workaround and not a fix - plus it wouldn't be easy to apply on the TV's with how they have the led light integrated in the bezel. There isn't anything wrong connectivity wise. My house has multiple cat5e drops in every room (All Roku TV's are hardwired) and I would know if the WAN connection went down as that is also constantly monitored with a redundant ISP for backup. Logs show no network issues at all and the blinking light only happens when streaming using the Plex app. I can make the blinking stop immediately by exiting Plex and streaming the same movie on Emby or watching a movie on Netflix.

Can anyone from Plex comment if this is intended behavior, and if so can we be given the option to disable it? This occurs on all my RokuTV's (different brands) all on 7.6.0. I'm guessing it's blinking to show its buffering data but its very distracting. Again, other apps do not have this issue (Netflix, HBO, Emby, etc).

I have the same issue, also on 7.6.0. The light doesn't blink when using Netflix, NHL Gamecenter or MLB.tv. It is very distracting, anyone have any ideas?

#7

Since Plex doesn't even want to reply to the thread, I'm assuming they aren't planning to fix this issue with RokuTV's. I've since switched over to Emby and am blink free.

I've just gotten a Roku TV and am seeing this behavior also. Its been a few months since the original post of this so I'm surprised this is still an issue. It is very distracting, so I am trying out Emby now.

I have this same issue with the TCL 55P605 Roku TV. The Plex app is the ONLY app that has this issue. Very frustrating. I'm forced to use my chromecast instead to watch Plex because I can't stand the annoying blinking LED while trying to watch something on Plex via Roku.

Just got Roku TV 50 Insignia 50DR620NA18 same issue - only with plex - I was freaking out since I just mounted the tv and when I googled it - the power supply could be defective - glad I found out it's just plex - hope they fix it

Same issue. Just got the roku tv and love it. Cheap bedroom tv and almost as good a pic as my x950b

Looking for a way to get rid of the light completely but until I can, it blinking randomly during watching a movie is terrible for sure.

Short Term: a little black tape.
Long Term: something else - perhaps starting with a bug report on Roku Forums:
https://forums.roku.com/index.php

Judging by the amount of traction this post got here (none) you could start the tennis match at Roku, they'll aim it back to Plex and it'll go on indefinitely from there.

Short Term solution probably best at this time.

I am having the same problem with my new TCL p605. I can’t find a way to notify Plex directly about this issue. Is this forum the only way to raise this issue or is there a way to contact Plex directly?

We can page the Lead Developer - like this:
@ljunkie
That’s about all we can do.

Thanks for the report everyone, and sorry for the delayed response. We will investigate the issue and update the thread when we have identified and resolved the underlying issue. Please stay tuned.

#16

Any update?

#17

@possum1807 yes, sorry for the lack of the thread update. We did identify the issue and it will be corrected in the next release.

Is there an expected date for the next update?
