I’m very sorry for the trouble, but could you answer. Is it possible to make subtitles without transcoding to Samsung tizen? At least a text format. For example: I’m watching a movie with DTS sound and when it’s direct play, everything is fine. But in the same movie I need subtitles and as soon as I turn them on, transcoding starts and the sound is transcoded into Dolby Digital. Not only that the sound quality is lost, so also not the weakest computer on windows 10 does not always cope with transcoding, but I want to transfer the plex server to Synology NAS, And he certainly can not cope with transcoding.
Do you have any reason to wait for the changes? Ask questions, create a bunch of posts? Or should one already accept and look for an alternative to Plex? Thank you very much for your understanding, I will wait for the answer

Only non ASS text based subs will not requires a full transcode. ASS based subs can be made to also not require a full transcode by selecting Settings > Video > Burn Subtitles > Only image formats.

I will try and get a statement from the development team but I believe that this is how it is for subtitles

The diagnostics did show one anomaly which was the change in behavior for audio dca when the subtitle was added - ending up transcoding it to aac rather than direct streaming as dca

I would like to see the detail of the requests made by the Samsung app for this change - so will need to enable verbose logging as well as debug and do a specific test.

I will summarise below the 4 tests that you did and show in the logs

Test 1  mkv (metadata id 3245) - The Jungle Book
video: h264, audio: ac3, subtitles: srt
Outcome: Direct Stream for Video and Audio and Transcode subtitles encoder=webvtt

Test 2 mkv (metdadata id 1226) - Penes Raros
video: h264, audio: ac3, subtitles: ass
Note: on tv enabled "Burn Subtitles > Only image formats."
Outcome: Direct Stream for Video and Audio and Transcode subtitles encoder=webvtt

Test 3 mkv (metdadata id 2263) - District 9
video: h264, audio: dca profile=dts
Outcome: Direct Play

Test 4 mkv (add subtitle to test 3) - District 9
video: h264, audio: dca profile=dts, subtitles: srt

Well, here is another problem (and it’s repeated all the more often) at 13:20 (1:20) I started the movie on the TV, it started fine, then I turned on “srt” subtitles (forced) and the application on the TV stopped responding, then this movie with subtitles I just can not see (and not only this one). The application completely stops responding to the panel. At what it is not important I ran the movie immediately with subtitles or turned them on later, the result leads to the application hang

If you can get the problem to be reproduced with a clip from that mkv - that would be better. Using mkvtools to chop the file after say 10 minutes and provide the first 10 minutes.
I would need media info xml and logs for your test with the clip as well as the clip

The video mkv has 3 subtitle streams - does the issue only arise with the 3rd forced subtitle stream ?

And have you tried to playback with that 3rd subtitle stream with other media players?
The media info shows the 3rd subtitle stream to only have 11 seconds

Well, here is another problem (and it’s repeated all the more often) at 13:20 (1:20) I started the movie on the TV, it started fine, then I turned on “srt” subtitles (forced) and the application on the TV stopped responding, then this movie with subtitles I just can not see (and not only this one). The application completely stops responding to the panel. At what it is not important I ran the movie immediately with subtitles or turned them on later, the result leads to the application hang

We appear to be stuck whilst transcoding the subtitle stream

I would need the media file so to get the problem recreated and submitted to our development team

If you can get the problem to be reproduced with a clip from that mkv - that would be better. Using mkvtools to chop the file after say 10 minutes and provide the first 10 minutes.
I would need media info xml and logs for your test with the clip as well as the clip

Yes, I ran all three threads, I can send logs from another movie, there is the same thing, I do not know what it means 11 seconds, but maybe this time before the application hangs up (on the TV for a while just three dots (quite a long time) and then it stops answer the buttons of the remote control
In other players, everything is naturally normal, before you bother, I checked everything many times (I sent you a link for a 10-minute piece)
P.S. Perhaps it is so, that 3 stream of subtitles is only 11 seconds, because they display only the inscriptions for the whole film, another subtitle stream (Russian) displays the dialogues of the entire movie and with it the same

Ok - lets repeat the test with this same 10 minute clip - doing one test with the forced subtitle and another with one of the other two subtitle streams which do cover the period of the clip

I would like you to try and capture the transcode session directory contents whilst the hang occurs on playback

So again - making sure Plex app does log to the server
Making sure debug and verbose logging enabled

When playing back and you get the ... dots and it hangs, note down the time and then on the server copy this directory content out and zip the copy
E:\PlexCahe\Plex Media Server\Cache\Transcode\Sessions\
and zip and also get the logs

Then later repeat the same test with the short srt stream (the forced one) - perhaps doing this second test after few minutes - or may be better server restart to get fresh logs
Again when you get the hang, note down the time and copy out the directory and all contents within
E:\PlexCahe\Plex Media Server\Cache\Transcode\Sessions\ and zip and also get the logs

Only non ASS text based subs will not require a full transcode. ASS based subs can be made to also not require a full transcode by selecting Settings > Video > Burn Subtitles > Only image formats.

What I would like to follow up now is the dca to aac transcoding when subtitles added

So enable debug + verbose on the server
enable Samsung plex app logging as before
do tests 3 and 4 and then capture the logs soon after
Limit the activity to just that as the logs may fill much quicker with verbose

I conducted tests 3 and 4, started somewhere at 15:47, finished at 15:50 (3:47PM 3:50PM)

The issue of DCA audio being transcoded to aac has been referred to the Smasung Plex App team

Thank you for all the diagnostics

With regards DCA to AAC audio transcoding when subtitles added, this was looked into by the development team and this explains what and why

  • Enabling subtitles requires playback through Direct Streaming or Transcoding. We intend to support soft subtitles without direct stream
  • Samsung uses HLS Protocol for Direct Stream/Transcoding
  • DCA audio is not supported over HLS
  • An alternative codec will be used to work with HLS and this is why the DCA is transcoded to AAC

We do not believe users would detect audible difference between DCA and AAC

So I am afraid this is what it is - because subtitles currently need Direct Stream / Transcoding.

The issue for us is that 4k files aren’t daddy too transcode. I guess I’ll have to change the files.
